School admissions question

Hello all,

I am due to apply for primary school in sep for admission in 2013. I live on the border of England and Wales. My house is in Wales but my preffered school is in England. My daughter has a physical disability and has a blue badge, a walker and IPF from English council as her nursery is there. She does not have a statement of special educational needs but instead a notice in lieu. I have viewed 5 school so far (both in England and Wales) and the school in England definately meets her needs the best and is most accessible. This is a very popular school and often has 100+ over subscribers. We live 1.323 miles from the school.

So my question is, would the admissions view her as a 'normal' child and apply the oversubscription criteria in terms of distance? Or would her disability and special educational needs be taken into consideration?

Thanks in advance for any insight

As your daughter does not have a statement she will be viewed as a normal applicant. If the school has a category for special medical needs she may get higher priority.

Thank you-I had a feeling that would be the case

Does the Wales/England thing come into it? Do the selection critera outline different levels for applicants from Wales or England? just curious really,.

No there is no difference. The notice in lieu is acknowledging that there is some special needs but not sufficient for a statement which is why you are getting IPF (individual pupil funding). You need to be very careful over the situation regarding this funding as you move from nursery to school as they will most probably do a re-assessment of needs. The problem is that is likely not to be before the cut-off date for applications.
You also need to pay careful attention to how to apply as you could need to apply to welsh LA schools on their form and english LA forms on their form. Check very carefully.
If you PM me which schools you are talking about I may be able to help more if we are talking about NE Wales.

Oh no I am in North Wales, thanks for the help though. The two la's don't seem to talk to each other so I can apply for both Welsh and English schools. I know England don't have to offer a place so I need to make sure Flintshire does!
