No more maths

DS is year 4 and loves maths. His teacher has said that they won't be doing any more maths until September, as they've completed their assessments and so don't need to do any more. Does this sound reasonable?
It's about the only thing he enjoys at school and he's pretty upset about it.
Thanks.

Hi jomidmum

& thanks for posting on my feed as well, very helpful...

But back to your query. I may be wrong but I rather thought that schools were supposed to provide a numeracy hour every day. (Woodlands Junior school which has fantastic resources says this about numeracy hour: www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/schnumeracy.html)

So I would speak to the teacher. Perhaps she just meant for this last week of the half-term and your DS misunderstood. If not - talk to the Head. Then do what I do in such ridiculous situations - ring the LEA and enquire what their policy is within the LEA about teaching maths and state that you're asking because X primary school has said they will no longer be teaching maths this year. The school will get a phone call.

My y4 dd did assessments last week and is still doing maths until the end of the year. Are you sure teacher didn't say no more maths assessments? Perhaps they are reviewing this Year's work?

I think he must have misunderstood. There is no way that they would be ditching such a major part of the curriculum. Maths must be taught every day, regardless of the time of year.

Maths doesn't have to be taught every day, neither does literacy, some of the best schools have never had literacy or numeracy hours.

On the other hand I would go and have a private word with the teacher saying something like: " DS told me you aren't doing anymore Maths until September, he's very sad as its his favourite subject". Then see what they say. I would be shocked /cross if it was true, but I would expect it would be a mistake.
