So much to think of! Where do I start?

I've been avidly reading some of the primary threads on here...about sats,nc, ort etc etc and am getting a bit panicky that i've been a crap parent and not swotted up on what I need to know about supporting ds's education (yr1) . To be honest when we lived in london and ds was in nursery all my friends and neighbours were chat chat chat about standards, Montessori nurseries and gina f. Now we've moved out to the country life seems a bit more chilled. I don't (seem) to hear the other parents talking about half the stuff on MN. I'm always stuck at parents evening for instance and not sure what to ask as seems to be do quite well but i feel i need to be more inquisitive. Anyway since having more time on my hands since being made redundant I have definitely been able to spend more time reading and just being with ds. But I want to swot up on primary eduction a bit more... Where can I go to? I just feel a bit ignorant, maybe in reality I'm not, but I'm sure I should be more switched on IYSWIM. Any advice welcomed

is your DS happy and seem to be progressing well - if so I wouldn't worry over much
my DS is in Y1 -we hear him read -he does a small amount of homework - we go along to school when asked - events, parents evening etc - and that pretty much it
what you could do is volunteer at the school - that would give you a feel for what is going on may be

some of them are frankly over thinking for whatever reason,
some their DCs have a problem that they need support for -

Hi chippychop -

will second Katefrompearson on their learning pages - great starting point - as well as posting here when you have a question or just need a second opinion when something a bit off or strange happens.

Some great websites I've found to support learning are:

BBC Learning (Beta - in design stage) - access appropriate learning materials through schools/ teachers and then select appropriate Key Stage:

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2): www.bbc.co.uk/schools/teachers/

Coxhoe Primary webpage curriculum links: durham.schooljotter.com/coxhoe/Curriculum+Links

also there is a year links - so just chose correct year and then click weblinks icon. So for example Year 1 here: www.schooljotter.com/showpage.php?id=50217

BBC Bitesize (especially for Y2 in run up to KS 1 SATs): www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/

learning pages on Mumsnet have some great resources:

Phonics worksheets - www.mumsnet.com/learning/phonics/phonics-practice-sheets

Free e-books: www.mumsnet.com/learning/ebooks

Woodlands Junior School KS1 links: www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/ichild.html - just hit appropriate icon on horizontal bar - literacy/ maths/ science/ homework links all great help.

Cambridge University nrich maths project - stages 1 & 2 work/ games: nrich.maths.org/6491&part=

BBC Little Animals activity centre: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/laac/menu.shtml - click the appropriate animal and explore.

For when you get stuck on terms in maths: www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/dictionary.html

BBC Words & pictures also useful early reading/ writing resource: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/wordsandpictures/index.shtml
