Marking Work (Maths)

This week DS (Yr 4) was allowed to bring home a different exercise book each day (before you ask, private school so normally does all school/homework at school) for parents to see. He brought home a Maths book which was last marked on 31/01/12 (I made a note)!!! The next day he said 'I wasn't meant to bring my Maths book home yesterday' (different subject each day), then produced 'said book' .....which had been marked all the way back to 31 Jan!!! I'm so shocked, gut feeling is to go straight to Head but conscience say go to form teacher first.........???

Ask to see the HT. All books marked daily in my school...I check up if I suspect not (primary HT). Feedback is key effective learning...children have to initial the teacher's comments and to show they have read home before they start the next piece of work. IMHO not marking since January is not good at all.

'conscience says'....

Thanks christineC..that's my gut feeling......and DS has just received a grade for Effort in said subject. I question how teacher gets to 'effort' grade without actually marking the work.

How does teacher know what to teach next if he/she hasn't looked at how children have done with that day's lesson? It really is basic good practice. I am getting cross just thinking about it!

...is also the form teacher....including English, History...and....rugby, cricket etc

And you are paying for this??? In most state schools I know the HT is checking on pupil books very regularly as it's such a crucial thing.

We (state school teachers) have to plan maths according to the children's performance, and therefore most of us are planning maths daily.

There are some instances where you wouldn't find evidence of the child's work in his/her book, but you would find evidence in the teacher's planning. However, you would still expect to find marked work in books (against lesson objective) at least twice a week.

To find the last marked work in January is despicable.
