Which reading books would you recommend for a Y5 boy?

We have had a battle with DS to get him to read over the last year or so; he's a capable reader but just saw it as a bit of a chore. We seem to be winning though-he's read the first few Potters (listened to the rest on audio), Spiderwick, Series of Unfortunate Events, Phantom Tolbooth (my favourite!), Roman Mysteries, some Eoin Colfer, Jimmy Coates, David Walliams, Horrible Histories/Science and The Pseudonymous Bosch books.

Can anyone recommend anything to try next? He doesn't really like the 'written about animals, but it's a bit sad' style of Michael Morpurgo or the whole 'I'm a 12 year old spy' thing. He's also a bit daunted by anything massively too long (ie the last few Potter books).

Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed-thank you!!

Yes, I had forgotten those My Stories - both mine liked them. And all WW1 and 2 stories!
And the Wimpy Kid ones.

Terry Pratchett writes some lovely books for younger readers (Johnny Trilogy) my boys (now 12 and 9) enjoyed some of his early ones as well (Mort, Colour of Magic). I am reading a Dragonslayer book by Jasper Fforde at the moment and think it would be ideal and slightly off the wall humor for a younger boy, I intend to pass it on to DS2 as soon as I have finished it.

I'd agree with Terry Pratchett (Truckers/Diggers etc and The Amazing Maurice) if he likes funny books.

Wow-thank you for all the replies, these are great! I've just talked to him a bit as I thought he might like the My Story series of books. He didn't seem terribly interested and when I said 'right, so you don't like spy books, football books or history books-what are you interested in?' he replied that he liked funny books that didn't have lots of description. I think that roughly translates as Captain Underpants and joke books ;)

Doctor Who / SJA books?
(but you can't go wrong with Percy Jackson or the Diamond Brothers books)
