How often should teacher read with year 1 dd?

Nothing in her reading record since mid March so well over 2 months now. In a sense it doesn't matter because I read with her daily and her books fit the stage she's at. Does the fact she's progressed and also does guided reading group mean that teacher will now do less reading with dd?

basically yes.

we have been told that although they do get the chance to read their books they mainly are heard to read when doing guided reading so the reading books are more for at home.

I don't think the teachers read with DS very often, maybe once a term or even less tbh. But the TA hears him every week, although they never remember to fill in his reading diary

Ours dont read individually with our yr 1 children but they do take them in their guided reading groups and listen to them that way, I try to read most nights with my little girl and they change the books they bring home twice a week but the teachers dont read these books with them or write in their records, they focus more with them in guided reading

Y1 DD reads twice a week in a guided reading group. This is the minimum for every child in the class, regardless of ability.
Also don't assume that nothing in reading record=child has not been read with.

I read with mine once a week, almost always in a group of between 3 and 6 children. I have a brilliant parent helper who reads 1:1 with the weakest readers weekly. My TA and any passing students/volunteers often help with additional reading too.

I'd love to hear them more often, but it just can't be squeezed in.

We normally get a teacher or TA at least three times a week.

crazygracieuk · 23/05/2012 11:06

Here it's once every 2 or 3 months with a teacher or TA.
Personally I'd prefer that they spent their time with ds doing phonics because I listen to him read daily and feel less confident teaching phonics. I would be fine asking teacher to assess if books were to easy but ds seems to need a new level after 4 months so 2 months is fine.

He does guided reading weekly and phonics more often so the school knows where he is at.

When my DD was in YR1 teacher never read 1:1 with any of the class - that's not how the class worked - they had a full time TA who occasionally read with the ones that were really struggling but they mainly left it to me (regular parent helper) - they would give me a list of who they wanted me to read with - almost always the least able readers and I would work through it. I rarely got to read with the 'top' readers - almost by definition these are the ones that patents hear read every night anyway and there was the guided reading etc which teacher and TA did get involved with.

Teachers dont have time to hear every pupil (in most large classes) but they soon work out (if they are any good at all Hmm) which children read at home and concentrate on those who don't read and home and/or those who struggle.

Thanks everyone - that's helpful.
