Is it odd to ask DS's teacher to be one of my referees...

I'm applying for a Postgrad in Special Needs and Inclusion (as a way back into work after several years of being a SAHM.) I have done some voluntary work supporting reading at DSs school; the main reference will come from the teacher who co ordinates this and who has observed me working with the children.

I need to provide two references. DS2 has SN and I have a close relationship with his Nursery teacher as we are in the process of getting a diagnosis for a suspected learning difficulty that is related to his SN. Given the nature of the course I am applying for, would it be odd to ask for her to be the second referee? It just feels more relevant to ask her than a friend.

I worked as a Secondary School teacher before becoming a SAHM but as I left work six years ago next January I don't think a reference from my previous employer will be relevant.

TIA!

Sorry, I should have said it's a Postgrad in Special and Inclusive Education (the correct title!)

Makes sense if you think of her as someone who has observed you, and who happens to be DSs teacher, rather than the other way round.

I do say that from a point of view of no experience what so ever though!

I guess I just thought of her as someone who has talked with me long and hard about the issues involved with parenting and educating a child with SN in mainstream school.

Thanks tumbleweedblowing !

I had my DDs class teacher act as a referee for my PGCE application, it was fine.

I have used my son's head teacher as a reference several times for jobs in schools (have done voluntary work in the classroom). She was always happy to do this

Ah, so it's not so unusual an ask! That's good to know. Smile
