I am secondary trained and want to move into primary sector. I would like to learn about synthetic phonics. Does anyone have any recommendations for courses that would provide a good grounding in this?

As there is match funding available for phonics training, you may find that lots of primary schools are investing in it. Call around locally - I'm sure they would be delighted to sell you a spot! Failing that, look in the phonics catalogue for the approved trainers near you and see where they are doing training. You may be able to get in touch with schools that way.

Have a look at my page of synthetic phonics programmes www.dyslexics.org.uk/reading_resources_and_programmes.htm
I recommend Sounds -Write, Sound Reading System and Phonics International (all in the catalogue -new edition in June).

I attended the Sounds Write training last week and highly recommend it (and it has matched funding).

I have taught children between the ages of 6 and 16 in a one to one situation using Sounds-Write progression, with amazing results. I have taught non readers to read in 3 months (older non readers) - just by giving them the tools to decode text. Luckily schools are now teaching synthetic phonics from Reception so lets hope illiteracy in our schools disappears for good.

General comments:
This is outstandingly thorough training. Those participating are given a full grounding in all aspects of phonic knowledge, including the alphabetic code and the processes of blending and segmenting.
