School uniform

Does anyone know where I can purchase school trousers for 12 year old boy that do not have a fly front? I need the pull on sort like the little kids do. My son has SD and can't manage the fly without wetting/defecating himself, so needs a quick up and down pair.
He is still in primary school and wears joggers at the moment but this is unacceptable when he goes to high school.
Any ideas?

SD? - sorry meant ASD.

Can't help I'm afraid but wondered had you asked the head teacher could he wear smart joggers? I think there's a valid reason for him to do so, though maybe this would be too obvious and he would rather not?

bramblina · 17/05/2012 13:51

Oh I read SN. What's ASD?

whyme2 · 17/05/2012 13:55

Have you looked at girls trousers? Just that they sometimes have elastic at the back and no fly. I have some (for dd) from a catalogue but I can't remember which one now. They look like smart trousers which would fit either sex.

I would second asking the head for permission to wear a near alternative. I would suggest that it would count as a 'reasonable adjustment' under the Disability Discrimination Act.

bramblina - it's Autistic Spectrum Disorder (Autism).

I am afraid school says uniform or nothing (I should send him in his underpants. He prefers them to trousers anyway. lol)

I will have a look at girls but aren't they 'boot cut'. Not tapered like boys? He is plump (read short and fat) too and the girls ones look very slim fitting.

I wonder if I could get boys ones that size that have elastic at the back and sew the fly shut. If I can get some a bit loose they might have enough stretch for him to pull down.

Will look into it.

Got to go, taking DS to monthly Psych appointment.

These go up to age 12.

Matalan have pull on grey school trousers. Not sure what age they go up to but I have age 10 for ds1. No zip, just pull on.

whimsy · 17/05/2012 14:46

Woolworths have some here

DS1 is in aged 10 Marks and Spencer ones, they have an adjustable waist and he can definitely get them down without unfastening them.

It is the adjustable waist bit that allows them to do it, you could try them.

auntevil · 17/05/2012 18:13

My DS (Dyspraxia) has adjustable waist and doesn't undo them, just pulls them up and down.
The other alternative - if you're handy with a needle - is to replace zip and trouser hook with velcro. Long vertical piece for zip small horizontal piece for hook.
Its a toughie. Most companies stop doing these older sizes in pull ups.
Post in Special Needs and see if anyone comes up with any other companies.

Builders, sorry I wasn't familiar with the word spectrum in the middle.

AFAIK, unless the school actually provides uniform then they cannot stipulate what a child must wear. I am on the parent council for our primary and we have had an issue with a family. I appreciate though, no-one wants to run in shouting "you cannot make me wear anything" but as moaning minnie says it would count as very reasonable and he has good reason to wear an alternative.

What great suggestions on here though, I think I would get a size bigger, stitch up the fly and add elastic to the back. Would a velcro fly be almost as tricky as a zip for him? I would agree that girls' trousers would be bootcut but you could possibly stitch them fairly easily or a semstress would possibly do this in minutes and it would likely not cost you more than a few pounds.

Do you have a seamstress in your town? Or dressmaker/clothing alterations shop, they might even be able to run you up a couple of pairs of plain trousers possibly even cheaper than the shops!!

I din't know if these are any good but they go up to 11-12:

amazon

I also agree that the ones with half elastic/ adjustable waist are good. My son has those and rarely undoes them because he's just too lazy! We like these:

M&S

Scholes34 · 18/05/2012 10:48

My DS is tall and skinny. All the trousers I buy for him (M&S, Asda) have adjustable elasticated waists, so whilst he does use the zip and button, he doesn't need to.

WhenWillTheBuildersFinish · 18/05/2012 12:19

Thanks for all the suggestions. A lot of trousers are too small for him, I am buying 12 year old now and he is 10. We do have to get the legs taken up by about 5 inches though, so actually I will ask the seamstress for ideas. Funny the things you never think of until someone else comes up with it!

Velcro fly- what a good idea. I could actually replace the whole zip with velcro, so it would be 'rip and go'

Just had a quick google and came up with these - www.woolworths.co.uk/top-class-pull-up-boys-school-trousers-2-pack/340627023.prd
