Ds is in year 3 and was supossed to start swimming today but it was cancelled. Going is also subject to weather as they go to an outdoor pool.
How many lessons is preferable in year 3?
Thank you

Most schools don't do swimming in Y3.....

kid · 16/05/2012 19:48

DS did swimming in Year 4 and Year 5 for 13 weeks (once a week)
His school didn't offer swimming in Year 3.

wishiwasonholiday · 16/05/2012 19:49

Ds' school does 10 lessons in years 3-6 in the summer term.

mankyscotslass · 16/05/2012 19:50

We only have swimming in YR 4, from the middle of September to the May half term.

simbo · 16/05/2012 19:50

Ours went once a week from mid Y3 to mid Y6 subsidised but paid for by us. Many schools only do one school year. It really depends on accessibility of the facility.

3duracellbunnies · 16/05/2012 20:00

Ours do a full term a year from yr1, but we pay for the pleasure!

redskyatnight · 16/05/2012 20:00

No swimming in Y3 here.

snowball3 · 16/05/2012 20:04

Ours swim once a week for both summer terms ( so around 12 weeks, depending on weather as we have an outside pool) for 30 mins a time. We swim from Reception through to year 6 ( and it's free!)

snozzlemaid · 16/05/2012 20:05

Ours do swimming from reception up to and including year 5. They each do one term and have 10 lessons in that term.

moribunda · 16/05/2012 20:36

ours do 16 lessons every year, but we pay a contribution.

pointythings · 16/05/2012 20:45

DD1 did a whole term in Yr4 (summer term). DD2 did half a term last year (autumn term), again in Yr4. No charge to parents, which may be why they are now offering less. I wasn't bothered, both mine had swimming lessons and were well above NC minimum standard before they ever had lessons in school.

I was a bit Hmm to find out that the top group got the qualified swimming teacher (even though that meant my DDs) - would have thought the absolute beginners would have benefited more... They both ended up with much improved stroke and speed however which means I now have to swim even faster when with them or the incredibly fit little sods will catch me which is great.

Suffolkgirl1 · 17/05/2012 08:25

1 term of swimming in year 3 for all. Children are assessed at the end. Swimming in years 4 - 6 only offered to those who hadn't met the NC standard the previous year.

VonHerrBurton · 17/05/2012 09:02

Same as Suffolkgirl here - a term in Y3 and those who haven't met set standards will continue, until they have.

We don't pay anything for it.

jo164 · 17/05/2012 10:06

Swimming has to be part of the curriculum sometime during KS2 it doesn't matter when a school delivers this. Some offer more than one block and some ask for contibutions towards the cost of travel. The target that is supposed to be met, if for every child to be able to swim 25m by the time they finish primary school. According to the news this morning 33% of children don't reach this target!

iseenodust · 17/05/2012 10:09

Swimming classes are in yr5 here - hence the popularity of after school lessons at the local pool.

Wolfgirl · 18/05/2012 10:28

Our school started swimming from beginning of Y3, subsidised and we pay £12 a term. We are in north Bristol.

PatriciaHolm · 18/05/2012 10:31

Ours do a term in Y3.

TheWave · 18/05/2012 10:37

One term in Y5 only

marge2 · 18/05/2012 11:02

Our school sends the whole of Reception and Year 1 swimming once a week for the whole of the two years, and if those who need it do a bit in y2 too. But we are very luck 'cos right next to our school is a 'trainer' pool belonging to another school that we can use. It's only about 4 feet deep thogh so no good for older years. It's about 20 seconds walk from our school gate. I think we pay about £12 per term.

I am not sure if they do more swimming in Y5 or 6. My eldest is in y4 and he hasn;t done any swimming organised by school since y1. He has weekly lessons paid for by me though at the local leisure centre.

roadkillbunny · 18/05/2012 11:13

Our school has intro to swimming in Y2, my dd is about to start, they do five sessions starting after half term, we are asked for a £1 per session contribution to the travel costs (it must cost more then that to get them their, downside of small village school, 24 Y2's and over 11 miles to the pool. I think we are getting a good deal there given it would cost ore in petrol to drive her there!
After the intro in Y2 they then do a full term in KS2 in Y3 or Y4, can't quite remember which.

shuffara · 18/05/2012 11:56

dd3's state primary does it for a term, one lesson a week, costs about £20. It is pretty rubbish. I think they are in the pool for about 20 mins. To be honest, the real learning experience comes from getting on the coach and having to get dressed and undressed with time constraints!

shuffara · 18/05/2012 11:56

other 2 dds do it all year round but are at private school so it costs...ooh.. everything we have really Wink

Shanghaidiva · 18/05/2012 12:46

every year has lesson from pre-nursery through to year 9 (school only goes up to year 9) once per week for 6 weeks. Older children are in the pool for at least 45 minutes and those that can swim well practise diving for rings etc.

foad · 18/05/2012 12:56

10 weeks per year from y1 to y4. Costs about £3 per session.

Merrin · 18/05/2012 13:21

10 lessons of half an hour from year 3 to 6
