Additional time/ scribe for SEN child in Year 2 Sats?

My son has a diagnosis of dyspraxia and other things, and is about to start sitting his KS1 sats. He can't write much, as it takes ages for him to form his letters.

I know that at KS2 he'd be entitled to a scribe for the reading + maths test and extra time in all the tests, but don't know if this is the case for Year 2.

Can anyone shed any light?

I've spoken to the school, and they said he's doing fine and doesn't need help- but this is coming from the school who say that they have no sen kids on their books apart from a child whose deaf. Then when the pupils get to the next school, a whole raft of difficulties rear their heads, as basically my son's school hasn't bothered to take the pupils needs seriously.

My son only manages to write the date and title in a 30 minute writing session, as his TA told me, and I've seen his exercise books. I know Year 2 sats aren't the be all and end all, but I'd like him to have the help he might be entitled to.

Hope someone can help.

AFAIK KS1 SATs are not timed (that's what DC's school told me when I asked anyway) so no need for him to have extra time as such.

It's also possible to do a reading task rather than a test where you read aloud and discuss what you've read with your teacher - perhaps this is what the school is planning to do with your DS?

Sounds like he should probably have a scribe for the maths test, but at KS1 the final grade will be based on teacher assessment anyway, so the test is "that" important.

Here they do Sats equiv in y3, and dd2 uses a laptop and gets extra time. The applications have to be in months before for approval though.

I would just ask the school, they will know. (and of course, KS1 sats are to test the schools, not the kids, eh?)

Will he actually be sitting SATS?

You only sit SATs if you're working at a level 2 or above. If he's still working at a level 1 or W, he won't be sitting SATs.

KS1 SATs are only used to test the school if its an infants school. For primary schools KS1 SATs are used as a base-line to help schools predict how dcs will perform at the end of KS2.
Some of the questions at KS1 don't really require much writing - they are ticking the box type questions. There may be lots of children who would need help with writing and would probably be "tested" orally. KS1 SATs often tend to be done informally and many dcs don't really realise they are being tested.

I've been supervising SATs with some individual yr2s for the past couple of weeks. Some hadn't finished when the rest of the class did and some have been absent. So I wouldn't worry about a time limit because there isn't one!

DS1 didn't have a scribe in Y2 SATS, but now that he is in Y4, they are thinking ahead and laying the foundations now for when he is in Y6 - to set the 'usually has a scribe/extra time/uses keyboard' precedent.

KS1 assessment is teacher assessment - the teacher will know exactly what your ds can and can't do using lots and lots of different evidence sources, not just the tests.

Thanks for all your input.

I'm not going to go into school, as there doesn't seem to be a need.

I don't know what level DS is. At parents' eve they said he was average for reading and below for maths and writing, so i don't know if he'll be doing sats or not, but as it's mostly teacher assessed and there's no time limit, I'm not worried now.
