the shop in the reading passage in yesterday's SATs paper was apparantly called The Sugared Plum?

No? Just my ds then. I blame the parents....

If it's from the book 'At the Sign of the Sugared Plum' by Mary Hooper, that's really a teenage book...to reignite the 'Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' debate :-)

seeker · 15/05/2012 10:17

Glad he didn't know that- he'd fins that even funnier!

singersgirl · 15/05/2012 10:36

Why is it funny? Is it some slang I just don't know for testicle or something? I'm always keen to expand my repertoire of double entendres...

tethersend · 15/05/2012 10:37

Fnaar fnaar Grin

seeker · 15/05/2012 10:38

Maybe it's only at ds's school? But yes, plums are testicles.

Northernlurker · 15/05/2012 10:39

My dd didn't mention it. Grin I think she quite enjoyed the passage though.

Don't speak to me about 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'. DD1 has just done it in Year 9 - which is fine - but when she told me the plot and the ending I broke down in to gasping, heaving sobs. Rather shocked both of us. It must be my age.......

singersgirl · 15/05/2012 10:48

Oh, yes, a choice phrase from Viz is coming back to me... but I don't think it's used by the boys here.

bizzey · 15/05/2012 11:22

WOW.... I am learning loads with these SATS..!!Not sure if i will be able to eat a plum the same again !!!!Grin

blackeyedsusan · 15/05/2012 11:24

you buggers...

Grin
Abra1d · 15/05/2012 11:27

'Maybe it's only at ds's school? But yes, plums are testicles.'

Well, that's my factoid for the day. I shall 'innocently' test that phrase out on my teenagers this evening and see if I can make them choke on their pasta.

bizzey · 15/05/2012 11:32

Abra1d...would love to know the outcome !!!!

LemonMousse · 15/05/2012 14:21

Me too Abra - I think I have given birth to a family of 'Finbarr Saunders' - my teens wil snort at anything:

The number 69

BMW

even the word 'Pianist' has them in fits I blame the parents too

Abra1d · 15/05/2012 16:45

Will report back!

I don't know about pianist. I am obviously living a too-sheltered life.

valpollicella · 15/05/2012 16:48

BMW...? What's that one?

auntpetunia · 15/05/2012 17:58

I've just mentioned plums to Ds 13 'he went pink, said muuuum and walked out! Obviously means the same in his school.

ToastofWar · 15/05/2012 18:04

DS1 (Yr6) looked at me oddly until I explained the title, then he smirked. Not sure I should have anything Hmm

ToastofWar · 15/05/2012 18:04

said anything

bizzey · 15/05/2012 18:14

HE ...he... I am still struggling on pianist and BMW as well ..I have invented something but might be too rude !!!!

Ds did not bat an eyelid when i asked him about S/P and carried on talking about it while I was driving......We didn't crash though, through my fit of the giggles that i was trying to pretend was a coughing/sneezin fit Grin

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 15/05/2012 20:58

Pianist, sounds a bit like...

bizzey · 15/05/2012 22:07

ok i have made it official in our house.....nuts are now plums...he he... sounds so much better ..(mummy he hit me in the plums...) Grin I have 3 ds's !!

serin · 15/05/2012 22:12

Used to be a Radio Merseyside show called.....Hold your plums!

We did giggle!

Abra1d · 16/05/2012 09:02

OK, total blanks drawn here when I idly dropped the expression into conversation. Are my children socially disadvantaged?

seeker · 16/05/2012 10:12

Mind boggling at how you dropped it into the conversation......maybe it's a regional thing? Or an age thing? If yours are older they may be onto bigger and better rude words?

simbo · 16/05/2012 11:59

Completely off thread but I'm glad that I now know what the book was, as my dd (13) has it in her school bag. Not sure my ds will want to read it to find out more about the story, but you never know.

meditrina · 16/05/2012 12:08

Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, anyone?
