Additional Teaching Intervention

Ds is 9 (Y4) and recently had an interim report with their current levels on. He is at 3a for Reading and Maths. It says 2a/3c for writing. We have been informed that 'This term your child will be accessing additional writing in order to acheive their full potential and make good progress. It may take the form of extra lessons or as part of existing lessons' (in a nutshell).

It's just the word 'Intervention' that makes it sound serious and I wonder if he is really that far behind to warrant this? Can I make it clear I am very happy this has been identified as an issue and that he is in line for some extra help - we just didn't see it coming and it's panicked me a bit. He's always disliked, vehemently - rather than struggled with, writing.

Make me feel better and tell me it's nothing too serious and they really are just trying to get him to his potential rather than being seriously worried about him.

I know I sound a bit drippy and some of you will want to tell me to get over it! Please don't shout at me and eye-roll!!!

It sounds to me like the school just want to support him.

My Dd3 is in a maths intervention group despite being in the top group for maths.

she changed school last year and had missed some work, this led to a lack of confidence so the school wanted to support her.

I think you should see this as a good thing, it means that the school has recognised that your Ds is not reaching his potential and they want to step in.

Why don't you pop in and ask his teacher for some more info about the intervention.

good luckSmile

OP I had this last year with ds in yr 3 so same age as yours now .I wouldn't worry about the word "intervention" I think they just have to get your permission IMEXP as my ds had to miss some playtime to do it.

Our school came into some extra funding(!!) and his teacher was allowed to chooose 3/4 ? in his class who would benefit from extra help with spelling and things and it did help.

All extra help is called 'an intervention'.

He's about 6 months to a year behind in writing, so it's great that he's getting extra help.

Keep an eye out for physical problems that may be causing him to hate writing so much.....

Thanks everyone, I think I'm just being a bit over-sensitive, you all made me feel a lot better!
