A friend has asked for help to solve this problem and so far, we are completely baffled.

Work out in the least shots how to get £5 with these numbers.
£1.50, 60p, 30p, 15p, 6p, 3p

There are no further instructions but we assume it's some sort of trick question.

shots?

don't think it's possible to get exact as all numbers are multiples of 3 and £5.00 isn't

fossil97 · 11/05/2012 22:42

Is it part of a multi-step exercise or game?

FermezLaBouche · 11/05/2012 22:44

I dont think it;s possible to get exactly £5 - is that definintely the aim?

Sharpkat · 11/05/2012 22:45

I don't see how you can get £5 exactly

StealthPolarBear · 11/05/2012 22:48

get to £4.99 and throw in the extra penny yourself

StealthPolarBear · 11/05/2012 22:49

sorry, or maybe £4.98...too late for this

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 11/05/2012 22:49

This isn't something really from primary school maths is it?

blackeyedsusan · 11/05/2012 22:51

they are all multiples of 3. £5 isn't.

AstronomyDomine · 11/05/2012 22:51

3 x £1.50 + 60p with 10p change?? No? Ok worth a try.

kid · 11/05/2012 22:53

Its been given to my friends Y4 child. I think its way too hard and none of us have been able to work it out. I don't see how its possible which is why there is going to be some silly twist to it. We can't figure out what it is though. I thought it might be something like you don't have to get to £5 exactly but apparently, you do have to.

Can you do £1.50 divided by 3p is 50p; 60p divided by 6p is 10p. Then multiply 50 p x 10p

dearprudence · 11/05/2012 22:57

MeDented has it, I think, but this is way too hard for Y4.

HandMadeTail · 11/05/2012 23:02

Well, if that's right, it's crap! £1.50 divided by 3p would be 50, not 50p.

MeDented · 11/05/2012 23:07

That's why I'm not sure handmade, because I'm not convinced you can really divide money by money!

4 lots of £1.50 and hand the £1 back.

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 11/05/2012 23:09

£1.50*3p=£4.50

60p - 15p = 45p

30p / 6p = 5p

Add 5p + 45p + £4.50= £5.00

But a bit hard for yr 4 I think?

But if you think of both terms in pence you have 150p divided by 3p. Which is 50p ....kind of

MeDented · 11/05/2012 23:15

Using your own argument schools £1.50 x 3p would be 0.045!

Thank you for your help. I've passed both answers over and will see what they say.

Far too difficult for Y4 either way.

Please come back and tell us what the answer was or it will torment me lol

You can't multiply money by money. If I had a pound coin and a 50p coin in my bag I couldn't, unfortunately, multiply them together to make more money.
The answer has got to be simpler. How was the question worded exactly?
