It varies from school to school. My children's school only go up to Level 9 (Oxford Reading Tree - most children in the school get there by end of Year 2) before free reading, but the school I worked in went up to Level 15 or 16... (we had most Year 5 children still on the scheme).

It varies. DD is 9, yr 4 and has half of the final level there to do before being classed as a free reader.

DD1 is 8 in year 3 and is just going onto free reading this week. A couple of children in her class have been free reading since the end of year 2.

It depends on the school and the understanding of what the child reading rather then just reading the words.

Depends on the school.
At the old school, free readers started after lime level.
At current school, they have scheme book until level 16 or whatever the last level is. (Most y4/5 is on scheme books!)

There are 30 levels at my DC's school, 30!!! Not surprisingly a fair few of the year 6's are still on the reading scheme. Madness.

I don't think there's any set time and it's up to the school/teacher. DS is 7, in Y2 and reading Harry Potter at home. He's still not a free reader at school. I think it's because he hasn't 'worked' through all the reading books at school so can't go on to free reading yet. He won't read his home readers as he just wants to read his own choice. We just let him get on with it tbh as we know he can understand what he reads, the meanings, nuances etc. And we'd prefer reading to be something to enjoy, rather than something to battle over. We've spoken to the teacher and she says she has no concerns over his reading so just carry on as we are. But he's still not a free reader at school! Hmm

Depends on the schools version of free readers. Previous dc's school it was after all of ORT stage 16 had been read but current school it's a "you are free to choose any book you want in a level" and they think its free reading because the child chooses the book. Certainly the second way has now motivated my second child to read more as he is reading books he wants. They all have a bit of a football theme though.

My DS was 'free reading' in Yr 2 but had some issues with other areas like spelling so was assessed. His reading age came out as 11 yrs in the assessment but they did say in the feedback that there was a difference between reading age and comprehension.

iseenodust · 11/05/2012 13:38

At DS's school they are made to complete all 16 levels. At the moment in yr3 no child is a 'free reader'. They do all get to choose their own books from within the band they are on.

CupOfBrownJoy · 11/05/2012 13:44

Mine become free readers when I think they're ready.

I've got one in year 2 so far, and one who is probably just about ready....

Its nothing special imho. I could just as easily have kept them on the stages, but thought they'd probably find the library books a bit more exciting.

mrsbaffled · 13/05/2012 16:14

DS (yr3) is not a free reader. He's on level 14 of ORT and was assessed as reading age 11.5, with comprehension 12yrs, 6 months ago. He choses books within a level, so maybe some people would see that as free reading?

mrz · 13/05/2012 16:18

We don't have "free readers" home reading books are selected for a teaching point even if it is a novel or reference book from the library section

simpson · 13/05/2012 19:30

DS (yr2) is allowed to choose his own book within his level (lime) and can change it whenever he has finished a book.

Don't know if its free reading as such.

ItsdefnotmeItsyou · 05/01/2024 21:09

Free reader comes next after lime 🙂 my boy has come home today and has moved from lime to free reader. The book he’s picked today seems like quite a big jump to me though🤷🏼‍♀️

Never. Scheme covers Reading until they leave. Let them.read what they want.
