DS is bright, lovely chap, saying he's finding work easy at school, but totally loves learning. He is free-reading, plays chess and in a Y2 maths group, if that means anything!

Don;t know anything about levels or how to find out what he could be at/should be at/is at for his age!!!! Could someone please explain levels to me for a Y1/ Y2 boy...

We do endless reading maths writing at home, it might be nice to check in with teacher as to where he is at, but don't want to appear pushy!!! he is happy, but maybe on verge of getting bored... Should he be extended more?

He should be, if your ds teacher thinks he is working well above where he should be and by the sounds of it he is, he should be placed on the AGT (able, gifted and talented register) according to his talents. He will then have to to included in plans to stretch him further. e.g. if they are doing half past and o'clock in time and your ds can do all time, they may look at o'clock and half past in 24 hours or in digital so its on the same wavelength as the others and it doesn't stand out but that he still makes progress each lesson. I have 1 on my register and that what i do for him. He should be leaving yr 1 at a 1A (start 1c,1b,1a, 2c,2b,2a) but if he is above where he should be he may be in the level 2's. reading wise it depends on his comprehension as it sounds like his decoding and blending is spot on so its all about understanding the text now.

My Y1 son is currently working at 3b in reading and 2b in writing and maths and his teacher has explained at length to me how they differentiate the work he does (along with another child who is at about the same level) while keeping him in the same class as his friends. Teachers these days have to be able to teach many different levels within one class, and I've been very impressed with the ability of my son's teacher to do this while keeping them all motivated and satisfied.
