DD (almost 3) is starting at the nursery attached to the local primary school in September.

She's keen to learn letters and can spell a few words and is trying to read (even if she can't). I don't want to push her, but since she's interested I'd like to encourage her a bit.

I don't want to antagonise a school or teach her a different method so I went in and asked what system they used presuming it would be Jolly Phonics like most of the schools round here use.

Instead it's ReadWriteInc - what I've seen of it, it appears that you need to teach the reading and writing part together which is more structured than I planned to do.

Is there a bit just on phonics or reading I could use, or is there another system (ie Jolly Phonics) that would tie in and not confuse her?

Many thanks

All the synthetic phonics programmes work on the same principle, teaching children letter/sound correspondences and how to decode and blend for reading. Using another programme for first steps wouldn't in any way interfere with the RWI teaching she will have when she goes to school.

I suggest that you have a look at Teeny Reading Seeds from Phonics International. It is free advice, guidance and resources for just your sort of situation.

Or you could buy the RWI Flashcards Set 1 and Set 2
