My DDs next School (Junior School) from September (Y4), only stream for maths.

Is this the norm or is streaming also for Literacy.
Just wonbdered as DD great at literacy but not so good at maths. So streaming not so good for her me thinks???

Many thanks :)

Ours sets for both. Streaming can have a slightly different meaning.

FuntoLearn · 01/05/2012 19:56

Her infant School streams for both - so I think its odd that it should only be maths. The Head teacher cant see the benefits of literacy streaming????????

We don't stream at all

juniper904 · 01/05/2012 19:57

We don't stream either.

FuntoLearn · 01/05/2012 19:58

What year is that from Mrz? How do you evaluate the children?

We have a 2 class entry, 60 per year

In Infants they set for Phonics across the 2 classes, and they have ability groups for literacy and numeracy. In year 2 they set across the classes for Maths too.

In Juniors they set for Maths and some literacy work.

LynetteScavo · 01/05/2012 20:01

Ours aren't streamed (two form entry) They are set on tables.

This is one reason I chose the school.

FuntoLearn Nursery to Y6

FuntoLearn · 01/05/2012 20:02

The school is 6 form entry, so perhaps this is why????

In DS's junior school they set for maths across the year group (one more set than classes).
Literacy is differentiated within each class. Actually although maths is in sets it is also differentiated within the set.

mrz · 01/05/2012 20:03

We don't set on tables either

FuntoLearn · 01/05/2012 20:04

Am I using the correct terminology - setting or streaming ... not sure as newbie on all this.

Well we have mixed ability teaching in all year groups

workshy · 01/05/2012 20:22

mrz -genuine question

our primary has only recently introduced setting following an Ofsted report that said although the school had great process in place to support the less able, they weren't sufficiently challenging the more able.

how do you stretch them when you have a mixed ability class of 30?

FuntoLearn · 01/05/2012 20:28

Thank you Mrz - Interesting quote from DoE at the end of the article...

"Research shows that when setting is done well, it can be an effective way to personalise teaching and learning to the differing needs of groups of pupils,
When setting is not based on accurate assessment of ability, or isn't used to adapt teaching to the needs of the group, then it can be divisive and limit pupils' aspirations."

Well in my Y2 class last I had children following Y4 curriculum in maths and Y3 curriculum in English just a case of adapting the work to the child

BackforGood · 01/05/2012 20:39

My dcs school (3 form entry) set for maths and English throughout Juniors (and Yr2 of the Infants school I think, but this may have changed).

Depending on funding, they have 4 sets for 3 classes sometimes, or put support staff into the classes where children find the work harder.

FuntoLearn · 01/05/2012 20:41

This is interesting. Thank you

DD is predicted to get a 4c or 4b in literacy at end of yr 3.
When she moves to new school in year 4 and they set for Maths only, can I hopefully assume they will also stretch her in the same way as currently for literacy, or just limit to NC levels expected for year 4?
So. is adapting work for the child the norm, if there is no setting involved?

DD has mixed ability class work is set on tables for Maths and Literacy - this has worked well for her as she see "top table" and wants to move towards it. Isn't teaching supposed to be about differentiating learning? My only worry is how do they know which is top and which is bottom - the school give the tables funny names e.g but they still "know" and could this have a negative as well as positive effect ( I guess not as much as being in a whole bottom class).
