What times do your YR children go to bed, actually fall asleep and wake up in the morning?

Bedtime 7pm
Wakes between 5.30-6.30

Nightmare by lunch if ds1 has had a late night previously.

I even said he could stay up Saturday to watch bgt-he fell asleep on the couch at 8.20pm before it even started!

MoaningMinnieRisesAgain · 30/04/2012 23:35

Roughly 8.50PM, 9-9.10PM - WAKES 7.50-8AM OFTEN NEEDS TO BE WOKEN BY ME.

Oops caps courtesy of the cat. Far too late a bedtime IMO but I'm buggered if I can settle them much earlier. Plus if they wake early they start fighting early - up at 8, leave at 8.35 for school = no time to start rowing with 3yo sibling.

BsshBossh · 01/05/2012 09:43

OP here. Mine will start YR this September so I asked the question as I was curious about my friends with YR children saying the children are shattered first two terms of YR and end up going to bed earlier. Has this been your experience too? If a child already is in FT nursery won't they be used to a long busy day anyway by the time they start YR?

DD nearly 4:
7pm stories on my bed
7.20 into her bed
Chatter, calls me, chatter as she winds down (but thankfully doesn't get out of bed)
7.45 asleep
We have to wake her at 7am on weekdays otherwise she'll sleep naturally to 7.30/8am.

DD is 5.5. We are upstairs by 7.30 and she's asleep by 8pm. Doesn't wake up till 8 (we live next door to the school so it's fine) and even then I have to wake her.

stealthsquiggle · 01/05/2012 09:51

OP - I agree - DD had an 8am - 5:30pm nursery day, and didn't really find school much of a challenge compared to that.

Now in YR, she goes to bed at 7:30pm - theoretically sometimes later when I am being particularly disorganised - is asleep 5 mins after story, and has to be dragged out of bed at 7am (ish)

TheCunningStunt · 01/05/2012 09:54

7-7am usually. Though he is deciding to fight going to sleep, staying awake in bed and being exhausted the next day for the last week or so!!! We are working on it...?tried later etc.....no doubt he will go back to it

miaowmix · 01/05/2012 09:55

Bed about 8pm, asleep 8.30 ish (usually), wakes up about 8am.

GooseyLoosey · 01/05/2012 09:57

Mine went at to bed 7.00 when they were that age and fell asleep shortly afterwards. They got up at 7.00am - no idea what time they actually woke up, but I would guess around 6.30.

Eggrules · 01/05/2012 10:00

Same as suzikettles - Ds has an 8pm bedtime, he's asleep usually by 9 (sometimes earlier, sometimes later), wakes 7.30-8am. Weekends he can be up from 6:30 to 9:45 am.

MY DS went to nursery from 6 months old. I was looking forward to a sleepy child falling asleep in his dinner. It has never happened. If anything he has had more energy since starting school.

noramum · 01/05/2012 10:07

Bed around 7.30pm

Light out 8pmisch

I wake her Mon-Thu at 7am, on Fridays at 7.30am and weekends she can do what she wants. That normally means she wakes up at 6.30am to annoy us.

3duracellbunnies · 01/05/2012 10:09

Probably with my nickname I don't need to post, but here goes: DD2(R)
teeth, bath etc done by 7:20,
story etc done by about 7:45 (shares room with dd1).
Asleep anytime between 7:30 (good night when she falls asleep in dd1 storytime) and 9:30, mostly around 8:30
Awake and full of joy by 6:30, 7 at very latest.

She needs more sleep than the others (!!!), and is often the first asleep. The only difference on starting reception was a slightly later bed time as more homework, hype, and sleeping past 6am most mornings. None of them seem sleepy due to their lack of sleep, unlike their parents!

Elibean · 01/05/2012 10:23

Similar to most.

dd2 (R) bed between 7.30 - 8pm, sleeps between 8.15 - 8.45, up anywhere between 6.45 and 7.30.

I rarely need to wake her (sadly!)

Tgger · 01/05/2012 12:18

OP, I think they are all different. Yes, some get very tired at start of school, some don't. You just have to play it by ear and go by your DC and how grumpy they are Grin. As I said DS was in bed 6.15/6.30 and asleep not long after for first term of Reception. If he wasn't in bed by 6.45 it was a disaster. Now come the Summer term he is in bed generally by 7ish so not that different, but is often awake and reading until 7.30 or 8 or sometimes later, no longer so tired. He couldn't read when he started school so that wasn't a problem!

mrsbaffled · 01/05/2012 12:30

8pm - 8.15-8.30pm - 6-6.30am

propercheesed · 01/05/2012 14:25

DS 6.11yrs bed 8.00 asleep before 8.30 up whenever he hears me could be as early as 7.00

DD 3.1yrs bed 7.15 asleep before 7.30 up 5 mins before me could be as early as 7.00 :) interested to see what she will be like when she starts nursery in september.

netime · 01/05/2012 16:53

my dd is lazy

school days 7.00 asleep around 8.00 i wake her at 7.15
weekends 7.30 asleep around 8.00 wakes up if left 9.30/10.00

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 01/05/2012 17:07

DS2 (5)
bath starts at 6.30
bed at 7-7.15
asleep 7.15-7.30

up at 7.30-8am

he is a little sleepy head at the moment

shattereddreams · 01/05/2012 20:40

OP
They seem to manage the same sort of times for bed and waking but there is a definite personality shift
Dd YR (and always done full days 8-6 at nursery) is tearful or angry at being told its bedtime or teatime etc
So whilst she isn't having more sleep she is very very tired!

shattereddreams · 01/05/2012 20:40

Btw my shattered dreams are DS!

BsshBossh · 01/05/2012 21:21

Thanks everyone for sharing.

As I mentioned up-thread, my DD will start YR this September. It's really interesting seeing sleep changes in my DD as she gets older. She's always been a good sleeper, settling to sleep within 5 minutes for most of her life. But as she's approaching 4yo she's taking longer to settle to actual sleep (now 15 minutes) as her mind gets more active. She's on the go all day and it's not until her head hits the pillow that she starts processing her day - and wanting to tell me about it! Delay tactics

treadonthecracks · 01/05/2012 21:32

My dd didn't seem to get too tired.

DS (in reception now) got/gets very tired and occasionaly goes to bed half an hour early at 6.30.

His behaviour goes down hill rapidly if he's tired. And we've had a few tantrums as he lets off steam as he's been good all day at school.

mumtoone · 01/05/2012 22:31

DD who is 4 goes to bed at around 7.30pm and falls asleep within 15 mins. She's the first one up in our house at around 6am.

knackeredmother · 01/05/2012 22:35

Dd is 4, ds is 2.5
Bed at 10.30
Sleep at 10.31
Awake about 9-10am

I'm dreading having to completely change this in September when dd starts school but it works for us now.

kellibabylove · 02/05/2012 10:11

DD is 4.5. 8-8.30 bedtime, asleep soon after. Up at 7.30-8am

ShowOfHands · 02/05/2012 10:18

knackeredmother, I really worried about dd starting reception because she was following the same pattern as your two. Late to bed, late to rise.

But it just happened. She happily goes to bed at 7.30, has 3 stories or 3 chapters of whatever book we're reading, falls asleep almost immediately and then is up at 7.30 and raring to go. I was unnecessarily worried about it.

And op, dd found school more mentally tiring. We physically don't really need much sleep, it actually serves the function of recharging the mind, the body can heal while at rest. The mind needs actual sleep. It's the massive learning curve which makes them very tired, not the length of day or amount of running around (though of course with children this does make them tireder, it's just that the bone tired bit of starting school is the mental leap).
