After School Clubs

Our daughter will be starting school in September and we are starting to look at childcare options for after school as we both work so considering after school clubs and childminders. Daughter is currently at private nursery part time.

I just wondered if it will be ok to ask to go and visit the after school club before putting your child's name down on the list? I am assuming so as I will be entrusting them to look after our daughter 4 afternoons a week.

Thanks
Michelle

Yes definitely go and look, have a chat to the people who run the club, ask loads of questions.
I did and I was happy with the after school club, my DCs have used it for many years now.

shouldnt be a problem visiting to see whats its like. if its anything like ours (is popular and has use of gym hall and ajoining room) be prepared for it to be a lot noisier than you may have been used to at nursery.

ds has been going since P1 (Scotland) and its been great for him. especially having friends in lots of different classes/years.

Hi Mumtoprem:

We visited our after school club - and it seems to be totally normal to do so.

Try and be vague about when you're popping by - so that they can't stage things. We arrived on a sunny afternoon and the kids were variously skipping ropes, playing tig and building a den. Two were sitting on the grass reading books. All were enjoying the wonderful weather - which we really liked.

Questions to ask: Do they provide a snack/ drinks?

Will they collect a child from the school if they have a club after school? (ours will).

What is the arrangement regarding being late? (if traffic backed up? train delayed? bus late? etc...)

Do they also offer child care during half-term/ teacher training days (this is worth it's wait in gold, especially if you still have to get to work on those days).
