Could someone tell me what level approx. this would be at?

Homework with a picture of a scary castle, moonlit night, gravestone etc. The children are told to write descriptive sentences.

"It was reely steep. It was dragon like. It was spooky. The trees were skary. The towers were rusty"

I am aware DC needs to use joiners and longer sentences, also needs to add in better openers. Apart from these things, what else is need to get to that 'next level' and what level is it at currently?

Want to be able to support DC learning but not sure how behind the work is currently for a year one student.

Thanks!

You can down load all the level descripters yourself from the department of education, or whatever its calling itself nowadays

Did you add the capitals and full stops, or did your DC use them correctly? Based on the very short sample, I'd say a 1b as your DC is not using connectives or a range of openers. There is evidence of vocabulary fit for the genre, but it's not developed.

Saying that, I'm a year 3 teacher so my knowledge of level 1 isn't too sharp.

Whatever 'level' it is I think it sounds great for year 1. Dragon like and rusty towers are really good descriptions.

Is it a Y1 child?
I agree with juniper on a 1b level based on that small piece of evidence.

ah ha.... I have guessed at this topic for dd this term.. and have been doing a little work with her.

try sticking some adjectives in front of words, for example: tall trees or tall, creaky trees.

try to find some descriptions in books. as examples.
