What attainment level is your year 1 and 2 child at or was your child at when they were in year 1 and year 2?

From what I can see the National Curriculum levels go from 1c, 1b, 1a, 2c, 2b, 2a etc and they are assessed in English, Maths, Science, ICT and PSHE.

That sounds about right.

Have you spoken with the child's teachers - that's probably the best gauge rather than what others on the interent are achieving iyswim?

Never got told YR1 levels with the older two, no reason to think they will tell me littlest mankies this year either.

But in YR2 DS1 got level 3's in everything, and DD got level 3's in everything except handwriting, which was a 2b.

DS2 is the dc in YR1 at the moment - from experience I think he will be on course for a 3 in reading, a 2c in writing and a 2a/3 in maths at the end of yr2.

But I might be wrong.

My Year 2 class range from P7 to 3C at the moment in literacy and P8 and 3B in maths. I've been monitoring the Year 1 data and they are between P5 to 2B in both subjects.

We update speaking & listening, reading, writing, all maths strands (using & applying, number, shape space & measure and Data Handling), Science attainment target 1, any science strand covered that term and ICT on a termly basis and all other subjects at the end of each year. Levels on all subjects are included in the school report at Year 2 and are avaiable on request at Year 1.

Handwriting is a separate assessment focus, but we don't give it an individually reported level; it is part of the overall picture in the writing level.

Ds2 in Y2 expected levels are 3C for reading, writing and maths.

nappyaddict · 28/04/2012 11:54

abigailS Have the Y1 children and Y2 children still on P levels got special needs?

DD1 never asked in year 1, finished year 2 on 2a reading, writing and maths, 3 for science an something else that has gone from my mind Hmm;

DD2 finished year 1 on 2c maths, 2b writing, 3 reading, dunno about science, finished year 2 on 3's for science, writing, 2a maths and 4 reading.

Iamnotminterested · 28/04/2012 12:13

Got it! speaking and listening, L3 in year 2.

IndigoBell · 28/04/2012 12:19

Nappy - p scales are only used for kids with SN.

snowball3 · 28/04/2012 12:30

DD1 was level 2C in all at the end of year 1 and level3 at the end of year 2.
DD2 was 1c for reading and writing at the end of year 1 and 2C for maths and level 3 across the board at the end of year 2. ( He was a late bloomer!!)

Mumsnet learning pages have more info about NC Levels KS1/ KS2 here: www.mumsnet.com/learning/assessment/progress-through-national-curriculum-levels

What I will say is that DD1 made a very slow start in KS1 and didn't perform at the 'expected level' on KS1 SATs - but we used that as a wake-up call and started to get more involved from late Y2. She has improved beyond recognition over the last two years. So if your DC isn't doing as well as you'd hoped/ liked - it doesn't mean that they can't improve (with help - sometimes considerable help at home).

DS is now in yr2 and should get level 3s in numeracy, literacy and handwriting. Not sure what else is assessed.

He got 2c in literacy and handwriting last year (yr1) and 1a in numeracy.

At the start of the 2nd term of y1, I was told my dd was a 1a in writing/reading/maths and on target for 2a in maths and reading by the end of year 1. She is quite strong at present but I couldn't help feeling there was grade inflation at play as that is quite a jump. She is easily reading at lime (possibly higher) and understands all of it so far. Does this seem like the teacher is saying 2a to make herself look good or did she make a mistake and should have said 2c?
I had never heard of these levels then so didn't query it at the time!

snowball3 · 29/04/2012 16:41

I would imagine a 2a at the end of year 2 was a more reasonable estimate, A whole level in what would be little more than 6 months would be going some!

belfaft1981 · 29/04/2012 21:03

Never knew in year 1 for dd1. Year 2 All 3's
dd2 is on 1b's at moment I believe.

belfaft1981 · 29/04/2012 21:04

In year 1 that is

motherinferior · 29/04/2012 21:11

I have absolutely no idea.

yellowhouse · 30/04/2012 10:35

DD1 in Y1 was 2c for reading, writing and maths
Now in Y2 on track for 3bs across all 3.

DS1 in Y1 is currently on 2b for maths, 2b for reading and 1a for writing. I think the teacher said they expect a sublevel higher for each one by the end of the year.

nappyaddict · 01/05/2012 14:57

So P scales can't be used for a non-SN child who is below the 1C level? So how would they be assessed?

OP posts:
TheAvocado · 01/05/2012 16:33

y1 reading 2a writing 2c maths 3

mrz · 01/05/2012 17:31

P scales shouldn't be used for children who don't have SEN many schools continue using the EYFS profile (especially if the child hasn't achieved point 8) others use W (working towards level 1) and others use different systems depending on the reason why the child is below 1C (children with English as an additional language or who don't yet speak English or children who have never been in school previously for example)

SunflowersSmile · 01/05/2012 18:14

Remember op that 2B is 'average' for end of year 2. Would be easy to freak out at all the mumsnet level 3s [and more!] in year 2!!

TheMagicFarawayTree · 01/05/2012 19:26

Is 2b the average or what they really should be achieving?

I ask as my Yr2 dd was only performing at a level 1c in Maths at the time of parents evening earlier this year her teacher seemed to think that this was not where she should be, but did not seem too concerned. I thought differently and spoke with the headteacher and she is now on a 'precision maths' programme but still way behind her peers and I am very worried.

mrz · 01/05/2012 19:43

no 2b is not "average" although it is often quoted as such ... it is the expected level for most children at the end of KS1.

SunflowersSmile · 01/05/2012 21:07

I stand corrected! On mumsnet it often seems to be seen as pretty much less than should be expected. I don't think anyone should belittle a 2b at the end of year 2.

mrz · 01/05/2012 21:09

certainly not it is a good level for a 7 year old
