What should a child be able to do at the end of KS1 in Maths

Hello there

My DD1 is 7 and just starting her last term in y2. She is in the bottom group for Maths and I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea as to what children are supposed to be able to do at the end of KS1, so that I can work out how best to support her and, if necessary, help her catch up a bit.

She is a bright little girl and very good at reading and writing, but has always found Maths more tricky. Any guidance would be hugely appreciated.

I am amazed at what they are expected to be able to do and can see now why she is in the bottom group! Oh dear. Still, plenty of time to get things a bit more settled in time for year 3.

To have and use various mental strategies/know by heart some number facts (eg number bonds, adding 9/11 by adding 10 -/+, doubles, halves etc begin to multiply & divide)

To understand Place value up to 3 places HTU

THanks Getout. What do you mean by place values (out of touch on jargon) please?

That seems a bit more manageable than some of the links. She has a new teacher who has resetted her to the bottom group and has really lost confidence. I need to work on building it back up.

basically understand that 23 is 20+3, 123 is one 100, two 2 and three 3's

and be able to add/subtract/calculate by using that knowledge

so if working out 27 + 38, she can partition the tens and ones/units (depends on school which vocab they use) to get to the answer (20+30+7+8)

I would start my making sure she is really secure in working with numbers to 20, knows simple number facts like halves, doubles, number bonds (pairs of numbers which total 10/20) can add/subtract confidently from/to 20, can count in 2's, 5's, 10s from any number to 100. Can say the number before/after 1/10 more/less up to 100.

twinkl and communication4all have some nice resources that you can print off at home. The communication4all website can be a pain, keep refreshing the page if you are having problems.

Am sure I can make things better in a few minutes a day. Might take a while though.
