DD has come home fascinated by the above subject. All the children will be doing little talks (no more than 5 minutes) to their class about a subject that interests them during this term and she wants do to this.

Where do I start? She says they can use the school library for books and the year 6 pupils will be helping them put their talks together why can't she do "my teddy bear collection like her friend?

DamselInDisgrace · 26/04/2012 13:04

Majority world countries or global south actually.

Oxfam have educational resources for young children.

Can't she just pick one country for her talk?

OXFAM have learning resources organised by age: www.oxfam.org.uk/education/

There are lesson plans/ resources on the theme your world, my world for ages 4 - 7 here: www.oxfam.org.uk/education/resources/your_world_my_world/

Why not teach him about UK? Surely it deserves a title of modern-day Third World country judging all the aspects (incl. education, economy, crime situation, healthcare, etc).

The Third World is a political description. I wouldn't start introducing such concepts. By all means talk about various countries, continents and their flora, fauna and buildings.

Thank you the oxfam link is great. the lessons on food look really good - I may suggest to her she talks about what we eat compared to what children in a poor country are able to have and how that affect our / their health. I think tha twill be more than enough for her though she keeps asking me why some countries have more money than others, why some children don't go to school and a multitude of other questions.

I do not think this is a third world country by any stretch of the imagination estland.
