Not allowed to do PE because he didn't have the correct t-shirt...

Could have put this in AIBU. Yesterday, ds came home from school with his ((white, logo-ed) school PE t-shirt under his shirt... spilt a bit of food down it so, as we have no tumble-drier, sent him to school today with a plain white t-shirt for PE.

When the time came for PE, the teacher said he wasn't allowed to join in as he didn't have the correct kit - so he had to just sit and watch. Am I over-reacting if I go into school tomorrow to complain about this?

Crikey Shock

All the things we used to do to get out of doing PE when I was at school, and now all you have to do is have the wrong t-shirt! Kids today, tsk, etc etc.

It's a bit outrageous. How did he manage to spill food down his PE shirt though? Is eating a sport now?

BerryMenlove · 24/04/2012 20:51

You are not over-reacting at all.
It's quite ridiculous.
Is this Primary or Secondary school? I imagine if you complain to a Secondary school they will stick to their guns on it because that's how they are. Hmm

This was a state primary school, Y1. DS is 6. He "forgot" to take off his t-shirt after PE on Monday, showed me the evidence when he got home, ate supper wearing his PE t-shirt and managed to spill some pasta sauce down himself....

thats riddiculous, school cant enforce the wearing of logod t-shirts at all, infact at primary school uniform cant be enforced and they are not allowed to discriminate against children without correct uniform.

a plain white t-shirt should have been fine! i would be complaining!

PanelChair · 24/04/2012 22:19

Actually, the idea that primary schools can't enforce school uniform is a myth put about largely (it seems) on MN. Primary schools can choose whether to not to adopt a uniform but, if they do adopt one, they can take reasonable steps to enforce it. They can, for example, make abiding by the uniform policy part of the home-school agreement. This has been endlessly discussed on other threads.

Having said all that, making a 6 year old miss PE for having the wrong t-shirt sounds ridicuolusly over-the-top to me.

yes the can have a home school agreement but there are lots of regulations on the uniforms ie that it has to be widely available to buy, not from just one retailer, that is has to be a reasonable price etc, (we just had na issue with our school changing the uniform for the second time in 4 yrs!) and tho they can enforce the colour of sweatshirts they cannot make you buy the logo ones from a particular supplier.

a plain white t-shirt for pe should be fine and the rules also state that children shouldnt be discriminated against, yes take it up with parents but you cant punish the child or make them miss out for example on pe!

5madthings · 24/04/2012 22:33

euphemia that was what my school used to do, it was a grammar school and we werent allowed 'branded' stuff my white t-shirt had a TINY and i mean no more than 1cm long nike 'tick' symbol on it and i had to turn it inside out!

learnandsay · 24/04/2012 22:36

You're going to have to whip the PE teacher with a wet towel on this one. This is a tricky exercise. It takes practice. But in short, it's all
nonsense.

olibeansmummy · 25/04/2012 20:13

I'd complain. Pe is a legal requirement and not letting him do it when he has appropriate, even of its not quite 'right', kit is not acceptable. I can't think how they could possibly justify it!

Sunscorch · 25/04/2012 20:17

I'll just sit quietly and wonder if the OP's DC didn't get his plain t-shirt out, and just said that his school one was in the wash.

And if not, it will be a school policy. A ridiculous one, but not one that the teachers will have a choice in enforcing.
