Confused about reading: numbered levels and colours- how do they match up?

Ds has been on level 3 since about Christmas and I signed him to Reading Chest a few weeks ago - the yellow/third band. School send home Biff et al usually and, though we have only had 12 Reading Chest books so far, I have noticed that they all seem far more challenging than those he gets from school. It's not so much the vocabulary but the texts seem longer and there seem to be more complex sentences and less repetition in the Reading Chest books - which ever scheme the book comes from.

He copes very well with them - reads most words on sight, sounds out others and nearly always blends correctly independently. His comprhension is excellent so I was thinking about moving him up on Reading Chest but decided not to - mainly because he doesn't notice punctuation much unless prompted. When he gets to a full-stop his intonation never sounds right etc

Anyway, today the ta has written in his reading record that she has put him up to level 6. The book she has sent is Rigby Star Yellow band - I thought yellow band was level 3? Confused. He didn't have time to read tonight but I have looked through it and it really doesn't seem 3 levels higher than, for example, the Big Cat phonics level 3 book we currently have from Reading Chest. According to Reading Chest, level 6 equates to orange band.

I suppose it doesn't matter too much as he is clearly making progress but I would really like to know which level he is really on!

yellow is reading recovery level 6

the school must be using this system rather than normal book banding levels/stages

Thanks for the reply. What is reading recovery?

Reading Recovery is a programme devised in New Zealand by Marie Clay to help struggling readers (it was promoted in the UK as ECR)

ECAR

Thanks, have had a look on Google now and am more confused than ever. Why would the school be using this in reception? Ds was not reading at all when he started but has made, iom at least, pretty good progress since. He can read the 'real' level 3 books from Reading Chest so that doesn't make him a 'struggling reader' at just-turned 5 does it? Shouldn't the school have told me if there was a problem. Obviously questions I need to ask the school...

I think the school is just using the RR levelling system not that there is a problem as he is obviously reading at an appropriate level

Lecce both my children were reading level 3 at this stage in reception and went on to be top group readers in year 1 and 2 so his ability is absolutely on target.

Agree with caffeinated. my dd left reception having just started on level 5 and is on top group for reading in year one.

I gave up on levels, colours and schemes.

My DD's Infant school uses yellow for starters, then red and then blue. Our library starts with red, yellow and green.

The ORT books we have don't match the level on the ORT website.

I let DD choose books and we read as much as she can and I help with tricky words. Much easier than trying to keep track on schemes.
