Has anyone subscribed to reading eggs - the online reading programme? If so, what do you think of it?

Thanks

Its very good and got my son started with his reading.

Try googling for the current free codes. I managed to get a 70 day free trial (37 days still remaining) My dd enjoys it and they test where to start your child so she started at lesson 60 as she can read a bit. I can't comment on the lower lessons. the lesson that I have seen can be quite repetitive however this does reinforce what they have learnt. Can be a bit glitchy sometimes too. I'm still not sure that I would subscribe at this point.

my DS is loving it, he has some reading skills and does know all his single letter sounds but I chose to start it off at the beginning rather than do the assessment, just in case he had any gaps and to build his confidence with it.

The only problem with it is that he cant quite manage to double click, drag and drop that some levels require. for these levels he tells me the answer and i click it for him. He is 3.5. send me a PM if you need the codes.

I would recommend it but I would imagine it depends on the age of your DC and what you want from it.

We home educate so it suits us as it is a complete and thorough reading scheme. We use it alongside reading actual books and other everyday reading. It is working very well for us. In six months, our DC has gone from knowing letters and sounds and being able to painfully and slowly sound out simple CVC words to a beginner reader.

I don't know how it would fit in with school as it is progressive and I don't know if it is possible to find exercises that will fit in with what is being covered in school.

I'd also agree with the point about mouse skills required. They can be tricky, especially with the timed exercises. It is very frustrating for DCs when they are having to repeat exercises because can do the reading part of the exercise but they can't click fast enough.

We got the free trial, DS is 4.5, loves it

SmallShips · 23/04/2012 12:46

DD just 4, is using the free trial, she knows all her individual letter sounds but we started it from the beginning and she's enjoying it.

publishorperish · 23/04/2012 13:46

We are on a free trial too. 3.5 DS is loving it - he also knows all his letter sounds but we started at the beginning. He couldn't use the mouse at all in the beginning, so I kept my fingers over his on the mouse for the first few lessons and talked him through using it. Now he can do everything himself, including drag and drop, albeit slowly. My 2.5 DD loves to watch and take part as well and sometimes has a go with the mouse too!

Lucky13 · 23/04/2012 14:21

DD is 4 and she has been using it about 4 weeks non stop! She thinks it's a great game and doesn't realise that she is learning to read. Her progress has been very rapid and her mouse skills have improved no end. I think one of the reasons she loves it so much, is that I sit down with her and we look at it together (although she is happy using the site on her own).

I would definitely recommend it, especially as for us it has been a great way of bridging the gap between our letter sounds and actually reading the words in her books.

It does take a little while to find all the activities on the site though and not just the lesson maps.

tiger66 · 23/04/2012 21:55

wigglywoowoo do you have the code number for 70 day free trial? Okay - think that we will go for the trial and see how we get on.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

Sorry i don't, as it was a combination 2 codes for 4 weeks x 2 plus 14 day free that it offers as standard by the site. This is the list I got the codes from but the on the thread that this came from ppl were reporting that they were expiring. Some ppl managed to get over a year free before they closed the loophole by limiting it to two codes only. You need to sign up for the free trial then enter any additional codes.

We used it and I shall for then next two - absolutely brilliant. And reading eggs press after you've completed all the lessons is very good for building fluency and comprehension style skills.
