Hi my DS(6) 's teacher informed me that he's moved from 3A to a level 5 in spellings. does anyone know what this means? i have scoured the internet and can't find a thing. i hate asking the teacher questions because i always feel like they think i'm questioning their teaching ability.

Any idea's what these levels are?

x

Yes it means he's a genius

I have no idea. I was always too scared to ask on mumsnet because you get accused of stealth boasting

Unless they are talking about the phonics phases in letters and sounds, in which case he's doing fine.
You need to know if she's talking about NC levels or whatever other stuff they are using. Surely as his parent you are capable of working out if he's spelling like an able 11 year old or a 6 year old though? Confused

no he's not, the new spelling list includes words like 'cloud' and 'spray' . So its deffo nothing special or national curriculum levels! x

www.letters-and-sounds.com/phase-5-resources.html
Have a potter about the site, it's used in many schools and recommended by the powers that be as a method of teaching infant phonics.

mamamerabella is there a link to the new spelling list please?

LeeCoakley · 20/04/2012 08:14

Yep. The 'ou' and 'ay' digraphs are taught in Phase 5 of the Letters and Sounds programme which is possibly the scheme your school uses to deliver their Phonics lessons. Your son's spellings reflect what he's been taught in the week.

And no idea why she should say 3A. Maybe they band the spellings within the school.
