let me know which curriculum they use so that we can help her reach the same level as her peers?

she's year 2. Is summer born so one of the youngest and firstborn, in a class with a lot of second born kids. (which I am sure gives an advantage for some, though not all, children DS certainly benefits from havng DD around and has been faster to do everything because of her interaction with him...but I digress...)

I am worried she is being left behind, and I don't want to hot house her, but she has expressed embarrassment at being taught with the y1 children when most of the rest of her class are taught with the y2s. in her words, 'I just want to feel important like the rest of the class.' All I really want is to get her up to speed and then help her if needs be on an ongoing basis to keep up with the mainstream kids.

I would tell the teacher what you have said here, especially DD's comment, then ask what you can all do together to help her.

I might also ask what level she is working at and what they expect her to get at the end of the year. This was all new to me with my DD and it has taken till Yr4 for me to understand levels (probably not helped by previous head being unsupportive of parents knowing anything!). A 2b is what is expected at the end of Yr2.

I agree with you about second children too (and adults the second time round!), DS has learnt so much from wanting to keep up with DD though his laidback, 'can do' attitude helps too.

I would have thought that the teacher would want her up to speed with SATs coming up and would already be giving extra help in school.

I'd ask them to send her home with work similar to that used in class. Working on a 1:1 basis at home is sure to enable her to catch up. It's just a matter of doing a little often to help her gain confidence.

I'd also ask if it was normal for those struggling to be taught with Y1 pupils? I know at my DCs school they only ever move kids up a class if they're ahead not move kids down if they're not, as it doesn't do anything to help self esteem.

Thanks both, have added those question to my list!
