Can anyone explain to me how I would find out which schools in the area, if any have spaces left for this year?
Letters we're sent out yesterday so they know has been offered what so would I just phone the LEA to find out?

Thanks

Yes, you ask the LA. They should be able to tell you. However, they will be rather swamped at the moment and the situation will be changing rapidly as people accept and reject places so you may not get an instant answer.

I have been offered my first choice, which on one hand is great however they have accepted more than 30 and will be splitting the class and as this is the first time they have ever done this I just wanted to know what my other options might be.

My plan is to just accept this place, arrange a meeting to find out the logistics of how this year would work then decide if its really the school for us.

We live in a rural area with lots of village schools so would like to know what else might be avalible.

you don't think that splitting the class and having smaller class sizes is a good thing?! I'd give my right arm and leg for class sizes below 32 for my dc.

blibblibs · 19/04/2012 16:52

I can see your point and yes the smaller the class size the better. However the school have never done this before and don't really have the space to do it either.
From speaking to them the have no plans in place at the moment but they are hoping to merge them back together in Yr3.
I just wonder if another school with average class sizes that are reasonably stable would be better?

No, not lost, just being daft.Grin. In the same way that when apologies are asked for at the start of meetings I have a mental list that I'd like to share.

I ask because this is what was done with my DS1's class, as his year group was running at 34 from Reception, when they normally have an intake of 60. They DID run it as a very large Reception class, they were given 'special dispensation' from the LEA, then they were split into two very small classes for Y1. By the end of Y1, 4 pupils had left, 2 for SN school, and two moved away, so they were back to one class for Y2.

They are still as one class now, in Y5, class currently has 32 pupils. But it is very well managed, despite the fact that this isn't an issue the school has had to deal with before.

The school has MUCH more problems coping with my younger DS's year group (DS2), as they took an intake of 90 that year. The year group is now Y3, and is running at 92, and the school seems to struggle much more with the large year than it does the 'small' year.

Thanks for your reply HuntyCat, my main issue really is that the school and building itself is very small. Its a small village school that only has one class per year group and always has.
I love the idea of a class of less than 20 but worry about where they might put them - there are no empty class rooms!
And at the moment they seem to have no plan as to how they are going to accommadate them. I would have liked to have thought that the had worked this all out before they accepted too many.
With all the new houses being built in the village I can only see this being a problem that they have most years from now and a school building that is full to capacity already.
