Hello

My ds1 is in Y4. He will be 9 in June. He is dyslexic but finally amking good academic progress after 3 years of...well, very little/almost no progress.

His school reading books are labelled 2.8 as per the accelerated reading programme at the school. I dont know what this means I only know the last book he bought home was "Guess how much I love you?" Hmm

At home he is reading Usbourne young reader level 2 and 3 and ORT project x brown band books...my question is;

What NC level are the above books and should I be tackling school about this - as I see it - discrepancy between the books he reads and school and at home?

TIA x

Oxford Reading tree Brown matched age 7-8 on their chart. I can't find levels for the others in a brief look on here, I'm afraid.

If he's not made much progress in the past, then reading at a year or two behind his chronological age is not too unexpected, but definitely something I'd be asking the school about how you can tackle this together.

Is he being heard to read aloud at school? How frequently? Do you listen to him read? How frequently? School should have given all their pupils some sort of standardised reading test and should be able to share with you their reading age compared to their chronological age. Some school have a system called Catch up in place that can help improve reading further.

You can get ORT books from the library and ask for the level he is currently on, or even the level above, to read together at home and see how he gets along.

Good luck.
