After being home educated and never having been to school, DS1 has asked to go to school and I have sent off the application today. Hopefully he will get in this summer, but if not, I'm sure they will offer something for September. Please tell me what your year 1 or 2 children do and how they feel about school. DS1 is nearly six, so would be year 1 now, year 2 in September.

DD is in Y1. She absolutely adores school and is very cross when it is closed for the holidays Grin

Each half term they have a different topic e.g. Great Fire of London, Seaside, Olympics, Fairy Tales and a lot of the learning they do that term is based on the topic. The way the topics are presented is normally quite creatively - e.g. when they did Fairy Tales, they had a fairy tale ball and had to plan (and make) the refreshments; they also had a "trial" where Golidlocks was tried for breaking and entering; and had to write a newspaper article about her escape.

They have daily literacy and numeracy, in small ability based groups. They do other activities in mixed ability groups or as a whole class. They have formal P.E. lessons where the explore a mixture of sports. They enjoy singing and cooking.

Does that help?

My DS (now 5.5 and in the last term of Year 1) is loving school. Loves the other children, has learnt to read/write etc; overall the experience has been incredibly positive for us all. Lots of children come and go throughout the year - he has had 3 children arrive in his class in the last 2 months so don't worry about that! Good luck to you both!

Hi. I guess it depends on the school, but both of my boys are very happy and relaxed at school. I have a Year 3 and Reception child. From what they tell me, and what I have seen, a typical Year 1 day involves:

Parents drop off, usually at door with Year 1. Children sort out coats etc, and sit on carpet for Register. I am told that they do Literacy and Numeracy in the morning, along with Phonics. They sometimes work in groups, particularly for these subjects - it all seems quite relaxed. School send out details of the curriculum each term, and you can see that they work through various topics. They may study "Instructions", or poems etc.

They have a break with a snack and drink mid morning, and play in the playground. Lunch is just after 12 noon for the infants, and they have another break mid afternoon.

In the afternoon, they do other subjects, including topic work eg. Castles, in which they incorporate Art, History, Geography, Music. Oh, and PE twice a week, computer work, Assembly, and odd days when the whole school covers a topic like Art, or Sport.

If you get offered a place, make sure you have a good look around and get feel for the school. I help out at ours when I can, and I do find it to be a very warm and friendly place.

Hey, I teach year one.. Here was my day!

Doors open and children sort out bags and coats sit on the carpet in their own
Place and take the register. Then we did phonics followed by literacy. Children then went out to play.
They came in and we did maths followed by assembly then back into class for fruit
Time. then we did R before lunch
After lunch we had PE followed by a shorter break time then guided reading. Tidy up the room, then story time. Children got themselves ready to go home.
Thats the basic outline!

I had a lovely day!! Sorry about typos... Im on my phone!
