Is there anywhere that sells school skirts/trousers in age 2?

DD starts school in September yes I know it's still ages away, but she is so tiny around her waist that she only fits in age 1.5 to 2 skirts and leggings!

I have tried Next, Mothercare, Vertbaudet, John Lewis, all the supermarkets etc and even with the adjustable waistband they are too big.

Does anyone have any other ideas please?

Does it have to be a skirt? My dd was tiny, and when she started nursery I put her in knitted pinafore dresses with a polo shirt under (in fact, most of them have the polo shirt attached as part of the dress, if you see what I mean. Got them from M&S - and the sizing is pretty small.

DS1 was 12-18 month clothes when he started at a nursery school with a uniform (!). I bought the smallest shorts we could find (age 3) and then bought some waist band elastic from a haberdashery and sewed it in - bunching up the waist. They came down to his ankles, but didn't actually fall down. The biggest problem he had was that he would get his mid-calf length polo shirt wet when he went to the loo. So I ended up cutting off half the length and hemming it, which looked a bit strange. We couldn't find school shoes in a size 5.5, so he wore ordinary shoes. For games, his flashing light trainers (the only ones we could find) were the envy of his friends.

You wouldn't guess any of this now that he is a strapping almost 7-year old Smile.

I would put her in a pinafore dress - waist size doesn't matter and these are available in age 3 so it could just be a bit long on her. I have the opposite problem - my DD is starting school in Sept and has just grown out of the age 7 dress (length wise and width wise) that a friend gave me for her!

Thanks for the replies - bunching up the waistband is a problem as it is uncomfortable and leaves red marks. I did think about the pinafore, but she is supposed to have a skirt and trousers as well.

I just wish there was somewhere that did school uniforms in Gap sizing as they fit her perfectly!

I'm sure someone could make them for you.

Why does she need skirt and trousers as well...do they have to where certain things on certain days?

Honestly as the mother of 3 small children pinafore dress is definitely the way to go.

whathaveiforgottentoday · 13/04/2012 21:18

My DD is also tiny round the waist (and still wearing age 1 1/2 knickers) so we put her in pinafores. Most of the girls in reception were in pinafores.
Even if you do find skirts for age 2, they might fit round the waist but won't they be too short?

Theas18 · 13/04/2012 23:28

A proper school outfitters will almost certainly be able to fit her. Remember they cater for all the local schools and you can bet there is a local pre prep that has them in proper uniform very young.

Pinafores are fab though for little ones- easy to the loo and minimal tucking/untucking etc to cope with.

I meant buy the waist band stuff elastic and sew it over the top (sorry not being very clear). It is quite soft and ds1 was fine - no red marks. But it was a pain in the neck to do. I get all alterations done by John Lewis now!

maydaychild · 14/04/2012 06:31

If you go pinny, practise getting it off for PE and go to large Sainsbury. They haven't got winter uniform in yet, but they are definitely the skinniest of anywhere !
Dd also still wears her 12-18m leggings in summer!

Fayrazzled · 14/04/2012 07:08

John Lewis should be able to order small skirts/pinnies in for you as they provide uniform for lots of individual schools and will cater for the pre-prep school market. You may need to ask in-store rather than use johnlewis.com though. They also do their own alterations if you need to have something fitted for your daughter. It won't be cheap though. Do you know anyone who can sew who could make some simple skirts/pinafores for your daughter?

Cleek · 14/04/2012 10:49

My dd was tiny when she started infant school. So most of the times she wore dresses. For skirts or trousers even now I always have to look for ones that have loops on the waist and put on an elastic strap/belt. H&M sometimes sell nice kiddie elastic belts. I bought some single colour ones for dds for her school uniforms.

welovesausagedogs · 14/04/2012 14:43

If you go to a uniform shop like one for a private school, you will find uniform in small sizes as most children will have to wear a uniform when they start at pre-prep age 2.

Lucky13 · 15/04/2012 00:43

Excellent - thanks for the replies - will try a uniform shop, just found one locally, so hopefully they will have sizes for pre-prep. Will also try John Lewis in store too.
As for sewing myself - a definite no no I'm afraid - well not unless I want her to look like she's in fancy dress!
