Phase 6 phonics

Ds1 (Y4) is on phase 6 phonics still. (He is on SA but has made great progress since starting Y4)

Are there any websites/resources I can look at which will give me an idea what he needs to be able to do to progress?

TIA

Phase 6 is basically prefixes and suffixes.
So he needs to know common prefixes and what they mean and when to double the final consonant before adding a suffix and those irregular words that don't just add a "s".

Ah.

Thanks!

Is phase 6 letters and sounds, different? Also prefixes, suffixes? Good luck, OP.

No it is Letters and Sounds

Hi

Just been on the website and ds1 found the phase 6 very hard but phase 5 ok and enjoyed the games so I will start him on phase 5 and work up to phase 6.

thanks

Phase 5 is teaching alternative ways of representing the 44 sounds

Becaroooo · 12/04/2012 12:14

hmmm...yes, he was doing a game where he had to decide what words were real and which ones were made up...they were divided into sound groups...so ay, ai, ou, oa etc.

He did 5 games and got 10 out of 10 each time Smile

Becaroooo · 12/04/2012 13:29

hahahahaha Grin do you know my son??? He is such a monkey! Smile Cant find his damn IEP anywhere! I was sure it said he was on phase 6 but maybe it was phase 5?? Hmm Will ask.

I hope I am doing the right thing mrz Sad

He has lots of books at home (mostly non-fiction) which he likes a lot but the school books that he brings home leave something to be desired IMHO..for example, he brought home "Guess how much I love you" when he broke up for easter...that just seems a bit wrong to me Hmm I see that as a "toddler book" IYSWIM? How is that supposed to make an 8 year old boy eager to read??? I dont know.

So, I will get him to read it to me before he goes back to school, but I am getting him to choose a book from home each evening to read to me. Last night it was an Usbourne "Bears" book level 2. He read it no problem. I was really surprised the other night as he read both a level 2 and 3 usbourne young reader book last week! And he was reading sliently to himself too!! Shock He did struggle on some words in the level 3 book but as he is dyslexic I would expect that.

Its all so confusing. I really like his Y4 teachers but I dont really understand what he needs help with. His IEP was a bit vague.

Did he choose the book or did the teacher pick it for him?
Content isn't what most Y4 boys would find interesting but independent reading level is probably about right.

There's no point in IEPs that are vague as you can see.

Becaroooo · 12/04/2012 16:16

He picks them himself. There is a choice but not much. He seems to find them a bit boring.

I'm not surprised
