She came home last week with it but I've only looked at it properly today. All she has been given is an A4 booklet with the title "Flyers" on the front. The first page has 'contents' written at the top and the back page has 'glossary' on it. All other pages are blank. DD claims to have no idea what she is supposed to do. I'm guessing she is supposed to make a booklet about things that fly? Is the word 'flyers' even used to describe things that fly?! We haven't been given any guidance on it at all. Could 'flyers' mean anything else? Help!

Would it mean anything that flies, do you think, i.e birds, planes, insects; or a specific type of thing that flies, i.e. whole booklet on different types of planes?

Phone a friend.

sphil · 04/04/2012 23:31

Good grief - no idea. 'Flyers' isn't a usual word for things that fly is it? To me a 'flyer' is a piece of paper advertising an event, but I doubt she'd have to do a project on that Hmm. Could you ring one of her friends?

WyrdMother · 04/04/2012 23:32

Have you tried talking to other parents/children from her class?

"Flyers" can mean a pamphlet

sphil · 04/04/2012 23:32

PS. I hate homework and I especially hate bloody
projects!

ZZZenAgain · 04/04/2012 23:33

no idea. Maybe there was an instruction sheet which your dd has mislaid? Could you call another parent in the class and ask?

Has DD written the title or is it printed?

Only asking because DS once told us he'd been made a 'badger warder' at school. It wasn't until class assembly that I realised he'd been given a 'badge award' and we weren't going to have to look after a stripy nocturnal animal.

PineappleBed · 04/04/2012 23:38

Could she be meant to design/collect flyers and write about them?

Doubt its about flying things if the word flyers has been written on by the teacher.

muminthecity · 04/04/2012 23:45

The word is printed. I can't see how she would be expected to write a booklet with contents and a glossary about actual flyers, as in leaflets! I will ask another parent tomorrow, just thought I'd ask here first in case the word flyers has another really obvious meaning that I was missing - was worried about appearing thick to other parents.

She is in Year 1 by the way.

Phone the school to leave a message for the teacher? When does her school hols start? No, I am just as mystified as you are, and I have a child in infant school too.

muminthecity · 04/04/2012 23:59

We're already on school hols, not back til 16th. I will speak to another parent tomorrow and see if we are missing an information sheet or something.

Come back and tell us! I am intrigued.

Dustinthewind · 05/04/2012 00:15

Does she know what the next term's topic is?
It does sound as if she's expected to create a NF book on things that fly, or pioneers of flight.
I'd go with it if you can't find out any more, and just have fun. If that was all she waqs given, it is a very shoddy bit of homework.

sphil · 05/04/2012 00:21

A glossary? For Year 1? Blimey.

muminthecity · 05/04/2012 01:01

She claims to have no idea what they have been doing in class, what their topic is or what the homework is related to Hmm

She has very selective hearing, my DD Grin

Will report back tomorrow, hopefully with more info!

I reckon she's supposed to collect enough flyers to stick on and fill the empty pages. Then list them in the contents page and maybe choose some words to put in the glossary?

LemonMousse · 05/04/2012 09:16

Have you checked the school website to see if there's any information on there about topics for this term? Might give you a hint.

muminthecity · 05/04/2012 10:25

Just had a look on school website - hasn't been updated for months Hmm

Going to drop DD at her friends house soon, will hopefully find out more then.

Right, just seen DD's friend's mum, there was an information sheet which DD has mysteriously misplaced. She is to research objects that fly such as planes, hot air balloons etc and write an information booklet about them, including a contents page and a glossary which must contain at least 3 words and their meanings.

OP posts:
muminthecity · 05/04/2012 11:46

This is on top of her usual page of spellings with 3 sentences using said spellings, and a page of maths.

She is 6 FGS Hmm

Cut out pictures from magazines and do a scrapbook approach.
Captions and a speech bubble or two.

JWIM · 05/04/2012 11:50

OP I am a Governor - we have parents - a very few - who would relish this level of homework - 6 years old and up!

Dustinthewind · 05/04/2012 11:51

Nothing to stop her telling you things about hot air balloons and you wp it for her.
Chinese kits are fun to look at too.

bronze · 05/04/2012 11:52

And flyers? Teacher should know better. Things that fly would have been much better
