I've already mentioned on another thread that earlier in the year I asked for DS's NC levels and the class teacher declined to share this information. I know that I'll be getting them at the end of the year but I would like to know where he is now. If he's struggling then I'd like to help him a bit more but if he's doing well then I'll ease off.

What legal rights to I have to this infomation? Is the teacher within her rights to withold it?

You are assuming that all teachers are good at explaining stuff to parents, and all parents are good at accepting explanations. Often (notice the use of the word) the sort of parents who want to know this sort of thing are the sort of parents are not going to accept that little Johnny is quite acceptably plateauing for a month or so.

I think the vast maj of parents would be ok with a plateau for a couple of months.Any longer and I think there should be questions, discussions etc with reasons. Most parents will listen to fair reasons.

Personally I think levels are important for the middle kids.Far too many schools do what they have to re SEN and the more able but then are quite happy to let the rest cruise. Far less likely to happen if some sort of NC leveling system was in place.

I agree with MrsHeffley

I think most parents would tolerate 2 terms of the same level - but if the school would then make it clear that after 2 terms of no progress they will act (extra reading/ writing/ maths/ etc....) with the child to support them through whatever the learning issue is - that would be so helpful.

I think it is a mistake to be frightened of transparency [and/or parents]. If you set parameters and prepare parents for the idea that there may be points where performance stalls or dips, I suspect that you'll have a great deal of support and thanks for honestly conveying this information to the people who care most about your pupils.
