DS went to bed at 7.30 last night and is still asleep now at 8.30. He has been exhausted for the last 2/3 weeks as he's got less and less sleep due to waking so early with the light coming in.

Plus relentless school takes its toll. We never have days off except for extreme illness.

But I always sense that he is struggling and exhausted at times. DS has to do an hour of physio before school every day in the morning. He has mild CP.

Just looking how he is sleeping in today (for some reason he never can at the weekend ???) I am wondering whether I should let him have occasional rest days. Do any of you do this? I worry that children will miss out socially or miss out on learning.

DS is only in reception and I'm sure wouldn't miss loads yet. What about Yr 1 though? I'm only thinking of one day every half term - at the most.

I have in the past let all three of mine have a day off for being exhausted. I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with it. If an adult was feeling tired and unwell we woudl possibly have a day off. Not a problem in my opinion - as long as it's not all the time !!

OK - but when you phone school do you say they're having a day off because they're exhausted - or do you make up an illness?

I just said along the lines of 'x isn't really feeling too well so I'm keeping them at home today' It's not a lie and tiredness can really affect children.
