Is this normal?

I went to look round a primary school yesterday with view to moving my reception dd there into yr1 in september. School was lovely the secretary showed me round, I met the head briefly. At the end she asked if I had any questions and I asked if it would be possible to meet dd's potential teacher. She said no because they swap round which year group they're teaching so they don't know who it would be yet.... Is that weird? Or is it me? It took the wind out of my sails and I left feeling disappointed, which was a shame as it was lovely there.

That happens in our school. The reception and KS1 teachers tend to move round every few years.

Swapping teaching years keeps the teachers fresh, I imagine they might get a bit jaded after a while ?

muffinflop · 27/03/2012 13:28

Ours move around every year too although not all teachers move every year. I like it personally

paddingtonbear1 · 27/03/2012 13:29

IME it's fairly normal for teachers to swap around sometimes. DD's old year 2 teacher now has a year 6 class.

sarahfreck · 27/03/2012 13:29

Totally normal, and I think good practice too.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 27/03/2012 13:37

Teachers need to swap around every 3 or 4 years or so for their own sanity career progression, so it's quite normal.

OP I would be more bothered by the fact that it was the secretary showing you round, not the Head, TBH.

Normal at our school, they don't all swap for the sake of it but they do swap some teachers often enough that they never like to tell you who you'll have in September...

PatriciaHolm · 27/03/2012 14:41

Totally normal and nothing to worry about!

AngryFeet · 27/03/2012 14:46

Our teachers can only teach a year group for 2 years then they have to move. But even if they are due to do another year in say reception they don't decide until summer term who will teach what class. Why were you disappointed? If it is a good school all the teachers should be good.

juniper904 · 27/03/2012 17:53

Only one teacher in my school has stayed in the same room since last year- and we've got 17 class teachers!

pamplemousse · 27/03/2012 19:52

Oh ell thank you to all of you, good to know thats normal, I have never heard of it before.
Iamnot she showed me round as I have limited times I could look round and the head had a PTA meeting, I knew about it and she waited out of it to meet me, so it was fine. It was a lovely school, but oversubscribed so doubt I'll get her in.
Thanks again for reassurance :)
