PE in Primary (reception)

My DD started school this last year, we were told that PE would be on Mondays but it seems that it is SO rarely actually done. She has certainly not had a structured PE class in the last 5 weeks, for 2 weeks they were practising for a print play but not sure why they haven't done it any other time.

They play outside in their garden area, but this is 'playing' not structured as they play in their sand pit, play house etc.

I come from a sporty background and I think it is really important, I have spoken with DD and she tells me they do climbing, balancing etc when they do PE, so I know that she has done it (!) but that they don't go onto the sports field other than at lunch time or into the hall at any time other than lunch and assemblies (the hall is where they do their PE usually) - just wanting to check that they hadn't been doing things but she hadn't seen it as 'PE' but this doesn't seem to be the case.

Have spoken with other parents and they are being told same thing by their children.

How much PE should they be doing? What would you do about broaching the school/teacher about it?

and label their clothes!!!! riverside mum

Doesn't bother me if they have clothes back to front or inside out. At least they have had a go and the clothes are on! It's the children who stand in front of an adult with a pile of clothes in their hands with the clear expectation that one of us will dress them ...

My DS son in YR has PE once a week on fridays. It is full change and they seem to be comfortable and enjoy it.

DS is a very young 4 and in reception. He swears he never does PE. He just wears his PE kit in the hall and then does things like play snakes, jump around, pretend to be a crocodile, chase his teacher, find all the red balls- but he is insistent that is not PE Hmm

My DD rarely had PE in Reception, on the ocassions she did, she said that she was always the first dressed and would help the others!!! (born September).

In Year 1, it was very similar once in a while and I did get told that they used to get changed and then weren't allowed to do PE because it took too long and had to get changed back again!! (I thought this was unfair, but didn't actually approach the school about it). I think it is important for children to get exercise and get out doing some team things, balancing balls etc.etc. but they seemed to just do a bit of movement in the hall - be a 'baked bean', 'jumping bean' etc. etc., despite having a lovely field to go on!

We moved schools this year and she has PE three times a week (Year 2), and will start swimming for the summer term as an introduction to when they do it all year in Year 3.
