Missed deadline for State Schools?!

I've been living abroad for the last 6 years, trying to move back to London this year. Looking at the information about State Schools, it seems that most only have spaces for children in Reception year. Have just missed the deadline to apply (he would have been starting reception this September), does that mean there won't be a place for him next year unless someone drops out?
Any advice or idea of the waiting list? Thanks in advance.

When I met with the head of tge school I want to send dd too, I was advised that if you move into tge area they have to provide a place. We were talking about catchment areas as my friend was also there and she does not live in tge area. I don't know how true this is ie whether it's a school place or your local school. Might be worth calling tge local education dept and asking.

Don't worry. They have to find you a place.

That can be at any school though. It does not have to be at your closest one. I don't think any school in London has a catchment area.

you will want to be very careful which part of London you move to. there is a huge shortage of places in some boroughs. Which means all sorts of temporary schools and classrooms are popping up.

If the school has a place then you can "get" it anytime, first day of school, mid term etc. The trick comes when they are full.... they aren't going to kick anyone out for you, and they can't "just slot another one in".

They are obliged to offer you a place (not sure about under 5yrs, but I think if you want a reception place they have to offer one), but the school may not be your first choice school.

Thanks everyone. Yes, it pretty much sums up what I thought....it will be left-over places, obviously the popular choices will have waiting lists and then all that priority stuff about siblings, letters from priests and baptism etc....basically, to be in with a chance every parent is now forced to send their child to school at reception age which is young for some.

You might be lucky, frutilla, as obviously people leave, as well as move into the area. You may be able to keep your DC on a waiting list, while still at nursery. It does happen. Speak to the LA, and good luck!
