How is the addition of two 2 digit numbers taught these days in Y1?,
Is it, both numbers in horizontal line? or Is column addition still in practice?
I am not sure how is DD taught at school to do this, but at home I practised column addition with DD, she is good at it and we started addition with carrying number.
Two weeks ago I had DD's parent evening and as I glanced at the white board I noticed example of addition: two digit number being added+ single digit number in horizontal line using a number line, DD doesn't need a number line, (so she says) and when I asked her how do you add two 2 digit numbers mentally(she could do do this for some time now) she answered,
I imagine these numbers in column(one above the other),
e.g.. 22
+24
My question is Am I doing it wrong?
Does it matter or not?
Can I keep practising at home my way? and DD can do it in any way school is teaching it, or Will that confuse her on the long run?
Will I do harm with our home methods?
DD is top table at maths, secure with number bonds up to 20, time tables with 2, 5 and 10
Addition of any two digit numbers, knows how tell time(clock), uses mathematical language, plus, minus, equals etc.
Doubling and halving numbers up to 100 and in general is very sharp when it comes to numbers, I hope all of this makes sense
