We use pocket phonic on the ipad (don't know if there is an android equivalent)

Try 'Hairy Letters'. It's good for practising letter formation.

You form the letters using the mouse, but it makes them aware of the shape they should be forming and where they should start the letter. It has loads of other games on it and I've definitely had my moneys worth from it.

Cheddars - do you have a link to hairy letters please?

There is something about monster letters on amazon, is that it?

My DS (5) could do with some practice too.

thanks everyone, will cahse those up. Just want to maintain some fun and enthusiasm with this

Actually I think Hairy Letters might just be iphone/ipad compatible.

The link is Hairy Letters

TBH I don't think ipad/ phone is the best way to go. You want bigger movements, like drawing them shaving foam on a kitchen table, or chalk/crayon on an upright easle

I second Hairy Letters

If you've been asked to practise letter formation I would go more with painting / drawing / keeping a special scrapbook rather than digital phone route. Tracing paper over a letter you have drawn? Part of good letter formation is also about your hand in relation to the paper, holding the pencil etc as well as just knowing the shape.

My DD loved having her own special whiteboard to write on ( also you don't go through loads of paper!)

We're writing on the kitchen window with a china graph pencil. Really recommend it.
Buy one in a specialist art shop.

OK, maybe not an app then (just as well they don't do android version of the ones you've recomended). We have an easle and I was thinking of getting a white board..... BUT how to make it so we aren't doing "school work"? He's fight like hell to sit down and open a scrap book, even if it was 'special' ........ mmme what to do

If he's 5 and fighting like hell, then I would ease off a bit probably. Online games that work with letter / sound recognition and plenty of fine motor skill practice ( Hama beads , Lego, Knex, Fimo modelling, playdoh etc ie anything with a good pincer grip rather than a mouse)

Purchased "hairy letters" and stylus pen for the i phone. DS (5) loves it and I think it's good value for money
