DD has been asked to stay after school for extra maths lessons to try to get her up a level in year 6 SATS. Should I be pleased at extra 1-1 or annoyed at the extra pressure they are putting her under

I can't decide. She isn't bothered by the extra maths or particularly stressed by SATS. Not yet anyway, maybe she will be after this!

seeker - there is no 1:1 funding anymore. That was last year's initiative.

Oops- we're still doing 1:1. I wonder how we're paying for it! Must check at Govenors on Monday!

Are you sure it's one to one or could it be small group tutoring?
Who will be carrying out the "extra lessons" your child's class or Maths teacher or someone else ?
If it's somebody else may not be very helpful to have a different teacher.
Sounds as if the school is getting concerned about this years results - is it to help your child or to boost the school's results?

DS2 is sitting the Level 6 papers for maths. He has been doing "extended maths" throughout primary.

He also had extra English to bump him up to an expected 5 from a high 4. As did DS1. There was no pressure at all and I am glad they both did this - it was beneficial to them.

I have no issues with extra tuition and there is no real pressure.

For DSs SATS are utterly meaningless though and they know it.

The extra tuition for both DSs was a small group, not 1-1.

"From bitter experience i would warn you against letting a primary school teacher , teach her secondary school maths. They have specialist teacghers in secondary school who will have a lot more experience of teaching level 6 maths .Do not let the primary school teacher muddy the waters!"

As a primary specialist with a Physics degree, I too resent this generalisation! I am perfectly capable of teaching level 6 maths too ( as well as level 7, 8 etc). It is true that Primary teachers will have different degree specialisms and some may be stronger in some areas than others but Level 6 Maths isn't exactly rocket science!! ( and yes, I know a bit about rocket science)!!

Be grateful for the extra 1-to-1. But get involved at home. You will get to know where the problems lie and an explanation by you might help in getting back up to speed.
