lunchbox - ham sandwiches or??

nevercertain · 14/03/2012 11:36

sorry for dullest question ever, but other than ham, does anyone have any suggestions for sandwich fillings for fussy 6 year old?

Must be:
Easy to make
Likely to be eaten
Not too expensive

I'm not sure she even eats the ham. She seems to faff about at lunchtime and is hungry when she comes home (I'm not sure how long they actually get to eat), so I'm looking for inspiration please.

thanks.

PS - have tried cheese, tomato, banana to no avail. Would even try jam occasionally, but may be forbidden.

just try the ham to see if she likes it?
how about pasta/rice salad? easy to prepare and eat (just make sure she can open the lid by herself)
just mix cooked cooled rice or paste with mayo or ketchup or cream cheese and some veg (peas or sweetcorn are a favourite with mine)

learnandsay · 14/03/2012 11:45

What doesn't she like, is she fussy about in particular? Does it have to be sandwiches? Can she have salads, pasta salads, pieces of cheese and little pots of pickle, cheese scones, rolls, pies, scotch eggs, sausage rolls, pieces of pizza

Try here for some ideas. Some one linked this for me a while ago, some good tips and inspiration on there!

Beamur · 14/03/2012 11:49

Mine has peanut butter, philadelphia or hummous.
I think many small children don't eat that much at lunchtime, there's too much else going on, plus if they are slow eaters, they don't get as much time as they would at home.
To vary it a bit I also offer pitta bread strips with hummous in a pot, rice cakes with peanut butter, oatcakes and babybel all go down well. My DD doesn't like mixed filling or meat so is quite easy to feed as there is only a choice of about 4 things she likes! I usually put in some cucumber slices or carrot sticks in a bag too.

supernannyisace · 14/03/2012 11:54

I have been banging my head on this one for many a year. DS is now in year 9, but still insists on a packed lunch.

Ham (but we all a bit off meat at the mo), so Quorn 'ham' 'chicken' etc slices. Err.. marmite sometimes. Peanut butter and jam. cheese (boring) those horrible pastes in jars which are made of fish eyeballs and other gubbins - he likes those?

I guess small DC are more difficult to feed- as they don't always know what they really like or will try.

celeriac · 14/03/2012 12:02

I find the soft finger rolls normally go down well, rather than a sandwich.

Philadelphia is the sandwich filling of choice here, but also grated cheese & cucumber & tuna mayo go down well.

Haberdashery · 14/03/2012 12:05

Does she like marmite? I find if you mix marmite with cream cheese, the cheese is virtually undetectable and much more filling than marmite alone (my DD would eat a marmite sandwich literally every meal if allowed). I also give her a Babybel or some chunks of cheese with a cocktail stick (sometimes cheese and pineapple), a small fromage frais, fruit and something a bit treat-like such as a digestive biscuit or dried fruit snacks (like those bear snack things or yoghurt raisins or similar). She'll also eat cold pasta with pesto (be careful to read ingredients if the school is nut-free - generally the more expensive ones are fine), cold pasta with tomato/veg sauce or just with a bit of olive oil, sweetcorn/roasted peppers and grated cheese. She doesn't like mayo, sadly. I've also given her cold roasted chicken drumsticks with great success.

dinkystinkyandveryverybored · 14/03/2012 12:09

DS1 is a slow eater - his favourite lunches are easy quick to eat ones. So wraps (ham and houmous, cheese and pickle, parma ham and cucumber), a sausage roll, pot of fruit and a juice is his ideal lunch. If she doesnt like cheese, try sliced turkey or sliced chicken. Sometimes i do DS1 a mini pitta with chicken tikka in and some cucumber batons. He hates philadelphia but his brother loves it - great in wraps with some grated carrot (squeeze moisture out first0.

hardboiled · 14/03/2012 12:21

Egg Grin. Hummous. Parmesan slices with olive oil. Olive paste with cucumber slices. Left over chicken from last night. Anchovies. Tuna. Smoked salmon. That's my weekly routine.

happyhorse · 14/03/2012 12:26

The only fillings that are acceptable to my fussy 4yo are tuna mayo, egg mayo or marmite.

happyhorse · 14/03/2012 12:28

He's clearly not the gourmet that Hardboiled's child is Wink

CecilyP · 14/03/2012 12:50

Mine liked Branston Pickle. Not something and pickle - just pickle!

nevercertain · 14/03/2012 12:55

I am impressed with the lunches being eaten out there! Really, she just wants to eat white bread, biscuits and cake, so I will try out some of your ideas.

thanks.

Houmous & breadsticks or pitta bread, pepper/carrot sticks and slices of melon all go down well with my DCs. They also like roast chicken sandwiches.

How about wraps or soft bread roll rather than slices bread?

VickityBoo · 14/03/2012 12:59

I like this thread. I'm new to lunch boxes for kids, dd is 3 1/2 and at playgroup where she has sarnies. She's slow eating and fussy, seems to only like ham, oh and occasionally jam. That's it, not cheese, chicken, egg and certainly not tuna! I think it must be so boring but that's what she will eat! She won't eat wraps or pitta, won't mind a roll now and again.

Going to try out some other things soon I think!

VickityBoo · 14/03/2012 13:00

Someone once suggested cold cheese on toast...yum! Of course dd won't eat it I happily would though :)

parttimedomesticgoddess · 14/03/2012 13:05

My fussy 6 yr old DD2 won't eat a cheese sandwich but will happily eat a bread and butter sandwich with a cheese string or babybel alongside it. Would that work?

dontaskwhereIlive · 14/03/2012 13:28

Mine likes butter sandwiches. She eats a bite of each quarter. Nothing else whatsoever. I don't know how she gets through the day.

It's a long road to hummous and salad.

Haberdashery · 14/03/2012 14:06

Not completely convinced by cold cheese on toast, but cold pizza makes a great lunch (cheap, too).

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/03/2012 14:16

Tuna mayo, Egg Mayo, sliced chicken. I find the Tuna Mayo/ Egg Mayo work better in half a pitta because it doesn't fall out of the bottom of the sandwich when they take a bite.

Check that the school doesn't ban nuts before trying peanut butter. Its completely forbidden in my DS's school because of allergies.

roguepixie · 14/03/2012 14:18

Another one here for egg mayo and tuna mayo.

Taffeta · 14/03/2012 14:24

Sometimes mine ask for butter sandwich or roll. I give them some cheese separately so there is some protein.

Mine more often than not have Marmite. As a treat sometimes DS gets cheese and marmalade ( hm natch ). And he is a Branston pickle fan too.

DD has soup in the winter, with a roll.

Blu · 14/03/2012 14:31

What does SHE say she would like?

Bread and butter is fine, IMO, and it's also fine to give the same thing or an extremely limited repertoire every day if that is what they like. And they are eating a balanced diet overall.

TheCunningStunt · 14/03/2012 14:35

Would she prefer a wrap? Mine takes in left over pasta in tubs too. He doesn't ever really eat a sandwich. But loves branston pickle in a wrap with cheese.
