Hair on your head- you wouldn't say "I am going to have my hairs cut."

LeeCoakley · 13/03/2012 20:36

Haha! You're right. I was thinking of one hair, many hairs.

learnandsay · 13/03/2012 20:58

But people do say I had the hairs in my ears or nose cut they just don't use that expression about the head.

learnandsay · 13/03/2012 20:59

And the expression it'll put hairs on your chest is also common.

juniper904 · 13/03/2012 21:47

Roofs vs rooves is the one that gets me.

I always say and write rooves, but very few people seem to. I don't know if it's a northern thing, or if it's because my mother is a pedant.

dwarves - dwarf
knives - knife
lives - life
wives - wife

mice - mouse

fruit

juniper904 · 13/03/2012 21:48

axis - axes

mrz · 13/03/2012 21:52

fruit is a bit like the hair example

one hair - lots of hair or hairs
one fruit - lots of fruit or fruits
