Child in a mixed year 5/6 class does a tables test the first week they start in a new school. Mixed tables 1-12. Scores 100% in fastest time.
Following week, given test on 2x tables. Please provide me with possible reasons for this, as I have a very confused and deflated child.

Because you need to practice your times tables all the time to remember then permanently? Nothing wrong with that.

IslaValargeone · 11/03/2012 17:59

So why not do the mixed test?

They might test different times tables each week and the mixed tables every now and again too.

I really thought this thread was going to be about knives and forks and place settings.....

Did not see it was in Primary Education!!

You could always extend him at home.

Ensure he realises the x2 is the same as double, which is repeated addition.

If he is confident with that idea, then set him some 3-digit problems to double. See if he can work them out in 5 seconds. As long as he can partition into hundreds, tens and units it should be straightforward.

See if he can divide by 2.

See if he can multiply and divide by 20/ 200.

See if he can use his knowledge of the 2x table to multiply by 4, or 8, or 16 or 32.

Lots of ways to impress his teacher, and for him to show off extend himself.

Am a bit surprised that they are doing 2x tables in y5/6 as they should be secure by then but maybe there had been a few silly mistakes made in previous work?

Hassled · 11/03/2012 18:08

Possibly because in other numeracy work the child hasn't been as competent and so he/she is now in a group where those are the most appropriate tables?

You won't know until you ask - needn't be a big deal. Just ask for a quick explanation because child is confused.

IslaValargeone · 11/03/2012 18:42

juniper I forgot that there is such a thin line between competence and 'showing off ' That'll learn her.

Oh, year 5/6 not age 5/6. I was thinking you all had super clever children!!

StrangeConfused

When DD did tables tests, the ones who knew all the 1-12's moved onto harded multiplication sums.

I would ask for clarification.

IslaValargeone · 11/03/2012 20:03

I thought that might be the next logical step Tilly or at the very least do the mixed test again as a regular refresher.
