Hi all

Thinking about getting a Maths/English tutor for my ds (almost 6). Can anyone recommend someone good who is local and not too expensive? I was looking at the SSC but the fact that you have to commit to year 6 and bad reviews I've read on here has put me off! Any help/ideas greatly appreciated!

Hi rainbown1

I would heartily recommend Mathsfactor - an on-line tutorial Carol Vorderman set up with the winnings of her successful settlement with Channel 4 when they gave her the push from Countdown for being over 50. It can fit in nicely in and around things - you can be there with your child, you get lots of feedback and you can see that it is building block, step by step progression but using all the current terminology/ teaching methods. It's £14.99 a month - but frankly that's a lot cheaper than most tutors.

Info here: themathsfactor.com/ - you can try for 1 month free of charge - so you can really see if this works for your DS or not. My girls both have had great success with it.

Others on here have recommended Kumon (but again it is expensive). Some recommend Maths Whizz too - another on-line tutorial.

We've done the reading & writing ourselves at home by encouraging/ supporting more of both. Don't underestimate the value of sending postcards or entering competitions to help with writing.
