Learning to write.....d for dinosaur - round the dinosaurs tummy.....

My ds was starting to learn to write his letters but we moved and he has gone back to nursery from reception and I want to continue doing little bits of writing at home but can't find anything about the way he was doing things at his previous school. He was writing the letter d for dinosaur like this - round the dinosaurs tummy, up his long neck and down to his toes. And p for pirate as down the pirates plait up and round his face. They are the only ones he or I can remember and I would love to find the other 24 in the alphabet. Does anyone else know this way....

This is my first post! Its ReadWriteInc - Google it, I think it'll give you information about each letter mnemonic they use

Yes DD does this in nursery, the only ones I can remember are i is down the body and dot the head and a is around the apple and down the leaf.

Oh and m is "down maisy and over the 2 mountains" or something like that Grin

Thank you both of you. Such a help to know what the whole writing programme is called.

Tried readwriteinc - all I could find was reading ideas. Would really also like the ideas for letter formation if anyone can find them. Ot can we get together and make up our own??

simpson · 09/03/2012 22:22

google round the apple and down the leaf....thats how I found it

"b" = first the bat then the ball

"d" = first the dog's body then the tail

I use these with children having difficulty remembering which way round d and b go (even in year 3 and 4 )

would just check if the reception he is going in uses read write inc as ours does and ds1 is doing some letter formation in nursery but other primarys in town use jolly phonics. If you go on the oxford tree website there are links to flashcards and a book for independant learning there

Readwriteinc is Oxford University Press. This is the system used by my DS's school and he really took to it.

It is really funny to hear him write:
Round his bottom up his tall neck and down to his feet; round the apple down the leaf; round his bottom up his tall neck and down to his feet = Dad.

Talk to nursery.

Thanks MrZ. DD is having problems with writing and getting the letters the right way around. I'll try this.

mrz · 11/03/2012 05:13

I wouldn't use those unless your child is using RWI at school as they are linked to the sound cards for that particular scheme
