Hi there - does anyone out there have experience of kumon Maths for their children?

I'm thinking about enrolling DD (year 2) and would like to hear what your experiences of kumon are?

Also - do they do Saturday classes in or around Oxted - weekdays might be overload for us what with the usual array of after school clubs she presently does.

Thanks in advance.

I don't really know Kumon myself, but the other teachers who post on this forum seem to really hate it.

Have a read of this thread. Lots of people have answered similar questions.

Personally, I'd recommend a book like this

I happen to live in Godstone, so if you wanted someone to tutor your daughter who's a darn sight more qualified than the Kumon instructors I've heard so much about...

Inbox me if you'd like to talk about it.

Kumon is about doing lots of worksheets of sums and was invented in Japan where doing sums is an important part of maths unlike the UK curriculum.

You can do it much cheaper at home by buying workbooks from a bookshop or printing off the Internet. Kumon teachers aren't qualified teachers so you could probably do an equally good job yourself.

Kumon involves doing a set of worksheets every day. My DS has been doing it (he's 5, in year 1 and struggling a bit) and he has really improved. He's been doing it for 4 weeks. I would recommend it. It does have drawbacks but it just depends on the child and how you manage the process IMO. It works for my DS.
