KS1 sats

Had parents evening last night (dd is in yr 2) at the very end of our time, the teacher started talking about these, and I felt I had no time left to ask any questions, think she presumed I knew all about them.

So I wondered:

When are they taken?
What subjects do they take them in?
Are they actually important to my dd's education or just the school?
What is the average grade?

Starting to have some sleepless nights over the school as I feel it is very pushy, something I only realised after she started, and am starting to question my choice...

I think they can be taken any time during the last term of Y2 - no set exam as such like KS2 Sats. They do them in English and maths - English includes, reading, writing and speaking/listening. They are used by teh school for league tables, and are not important to your daughter. The average for the end of KS1 is a level 2.
They are not formal tests, but done mainly on teacher assessment. At my DCs school they are treated very much as games and quizzes - neither of my DCs were even aware that tehy had done their SATS.

Ds now yr3 didn't know he sat any last year. School said they don't tell the kids, don't bother telling them yourself and it is majority teacher assessment over a period of time.

They are used, afaik, to test the school - not to judge your child in any way. Some schools seem to take them a bit more seriously, but ours (thankfully) was very relaxed about them. Nothing like KS2 sats.

dd1 knew vaguely that she was doing them, but they did so many practice papers around that time (May in Y2) that she never knew which one was 'real'. She and her class were utterly, totally unstressed about them - which is as it should be.

Thank you I certainly don't want her to be bothered by them, but she will know as I think they take them in the hall rather than the class room. They are expected to get 3's I was guessing this would be above the average.

Thank you....

I hope they aren't taken in the hall - that would place rather more importance upon them than they are due. Not impressed by reports of children doing past papers, either!

The tests are a very small piece of the evidence Y2 teachers need to collect to form the teacher assessment that is reported at the end of Y2. They are very much like the kinds of activities and questions that children do every day in Y2.

They aren't used for league tables, as one poster says. The teacher assessments are reported both centrally and to parents. Y2 parents will also have the year group's teacher assessment statistics reported to them, along with last year's national results for comparison.
